Had two iphone 4's smashed in one day. My wife trips and falls after lunch today at a local hotel (she's fine) and her iphone is in her hand when she lands. Good bye glass.  Fortunately, her employer while buy her a new one. fast forward a few hours and we are at my 13 year old's track meet and we are walking back to the car and he drops his iphone. Yep, smashed glass again!  He didn't have his case on for some reason. I called ATT and they said I would have to buy another phone for $499. That was their solution. Horse hockey on that I say! I have an Apple store pretty close by so I went by there after dinner. No problem they said. Brand new replacement for $149. Much better. We are going tomorrow to buy a good case. Geez...

I was going to suggest the Apple store.  When I was last there, some guy came in with an iPhone with a completely smashed screen.  They tested it from the docking port and everything checked okay; he came back in a couple hours to pick it up with a new screen installed.  I believe in his case even the LCD was fine, just the protective glass was smashed.  He turned beet red when I asked what happened so fill in your own story :)

Ok, I'll stop whining about stepping on my reading glasses tonight.

Bummer to have that happen, ESP when you realize how much you're reliant your phone now.

I had broken the front glass on mine last year. I had gotten rid of the extended warranty shortly before that. Apple told me and I confirmed this that the glass is part of the screen and electronics so you can't just replace the glass and companies that sell just the glass give you a part that doesn't fit. $149 later with a replacement phone, I'm more careful. The Ottprotected ended didn't protect it from me.

Probably wasn't a 3G iPhone.  3Gs originally came out with glass sitting on the LCD digitizer.  Other models have the glass glued to the digitizer.  I don't know if the retina 4Ss are glued or not; either way, sucks :)

got the new case today as well as a screen protector.  Funny, tho, the Apple guy tried to send me to the ATT store to put it on.  [blink]  Said it was tricky!  No thanks.  Wasn't brain surgery or anything to put on.  On a side note, I had until a week ago a Motorola Atrix android phone.  The battery quit so I took the phone to Best Buy where I had a buy back plan.  They said they could give me $300 towards the cost of a new phone, in this case an iPhone 4s.  I was only 7 to 8 months into my last contract. so for $199, I could have a new iPhone 4S.  No brainer for me.  Having had both the iphone 4 and the Atrix, the iPhone is still the clearly superior phone.  It's smoother, works better, the screen is fantastic, the keyboard is a LOT better and the new 4G is really fast!  Plus, all the apps work better in IOS rather than android.  You also don't have to pay $99 a year to sync with mobile me.  It's free with iCloud.  There's a reason Apple has a $100B in the bank.  They have superior products.  Just like Festool!  ;D ;D

One thing Android has that iOS doesn't is Swype.  Would love to have that keyboard on iOS; so much faster to use than pecking around.  Give it a try on your Atrix if it wasn't already preloaded.

i too managed to break the glass on an iPhone 3GS... took it to one of the local phone repair shops to repair the glass. $60 for the glass, $50 for the case.

Saw a video the other day on iPhone 5 conceptual features; thin as a dime, will project a laser keyboard on any surface (full size), will project any videos you may be watching as a hologram or on the wall. Sounds real expensive.

WOW  [eek]. If that were all true then it would be amazing but something tells me it's fake !

well, the technology for projecting keyboards already exists (I saw it on some gadget show on TV). you just have to wonder how expensive the whole thing will be.
