I'm passing along this info for anyone who uses (out of necessity or love for the product) the Behlens Rock Hard Table Top Varnish that's been around for a number of years. It's been replaced. Sorry. [sad]
I can't reveal who within the company shared this information, but parent company RPM Wood Finishes Group, Inc. lost its source for phenolic resin, the major component in the varnish, due to their purchasing volume and the economy. It's quite understandable that if one company can't afford to buy a certain minimum quantity of a product from a supplier, that supplier will no longer supply or produce said product. There just weren't enough sales of the varnish.
Soooo, RPM reformulated the Rockhard Table Top Varnish into Rockhard Table Top Urethane Varnish that's low VOC, reducable with off the shelf mineral spirits or lacquer thinner, has a less amber tone to it AND, is available in both gloss and satin. It's performance outside of a lab has yet to be determined, by you the woodworker/finisher, so there's no real world feedback yet. Supposedly it's just as good if not better than the original, but that could just be marketing hype. There will no longer be packaged and sold, a specific Rockhard Table Top Varnish Reducer, to reduce RPM's costs. Like I said before, just use off the shelf mineral spirits or lacquer thinner to reduce and clean up.
Anyone who uses the new product is encouraged to post in this thread their findings/opinions.
BTW, I just bought up as much of the old as I could.
