I (hate to admit it) but I totally forgot about his birthday. John Lennon was a gift to this world, taken from us way too early and taken in such a terrible way. A belated Happy 74th  Birthday, John.

I second that.  Though I'm too young to remember John when he was alive, it's amazing how well his music stands up today.  Much better than anything else on the radio right now!!!  But moreso, it seems like he an even more amazing human being.

Oh, he and that  group - "The Beatles" I think that's their name ;) were of my generation and I bet millions and millions of others watched - and will never forget, their American TV debut on the Ed Sullivan show - February 64. I say "of my generation" simply to place their appearance in a timeline, but his and the Beatles' music is timeless and like them or hate them, they remain the most influential band of all time and will likely remain so. John Lennon was an amazing human being - in many ways, but even he, no, especially he, would caution against believing he was not a man like any of us, replete with human faults and frailities

I was hitch-hiking in the UK in the 60s and was given a lift by John Lennon's Aunt - she lived not far away and I was wearing a Beatles Jacket that my mum had made for a UK knitting magazine copying the Beatles jackets of the time.

Oh, those Beatle jackets! Wow, you met Aunt Mimi, that's worth remembering.
A few years ago, I very briefly  met Paul McCartney and his girlfriend (now his wife) and there was 2 things I remember;  one - he's a real gentleman and two - I made an absolute idiot of myself. [embarassed]

In 1966, my uncle was playing upright bass in a country-western band  at (I think) the NCO club at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan. one day, staff came in while they were rehearsing and told them a band from England would be coming in to rehearse and would be playing a show that evening at the club. His band removed their equipment from the stage in prep for the guest band. When they arrived, he was introduced to the Beatles and helped them with any questions as they set up. He was surprised at how big their amps were and how loud they played. When he asked John about it, he just laughed and commented about it being rock-n-roll. Word got out that they were at the club and my uncle couldn't believe all the screaming people (mostly girls) outside. Needless to say, security was very tight.
