Bench and Rail Dogs in UK and Europe

Hi Everyone

The European crowd have always looked with envy at the Qwas dog discussion amongst the NA guys - well now a UK company, Intelligent Workshop, have sourced some dogs for the Old World.

I have been lucky enough to have given them a quick look and they are super. During the work with these dogs I produced a design for a new type of dog - the 'Parf' dog - which is being made now. When it is ready for testing I will let you know how it performs.

I have been tasked to do a review of the IW and Qwas dogs for a UK magazine sometime soon. I will keep you informed.

Jonathan, we are considering some alternative designs and I'm open to suggestions.  The 'Parf Dogs' are currently in development to Peter's specs.  I have already considered threading the dogs and that is certainly one possibility.  How would you use the threaded part of the dog?

As for a low profile option.  This has also crossed my mind.  I'm not sure whether to reduce the profile of the standard dogs or have an additional dog that is low profile.  I don't want to have too many alternative dogs in the range, as it starts to get expensive.  But again, I'm open to suggestions and feedback.

I work a lot with 6mm stock and don't see the use of bigger dogs anyway. Even if the dogs were only 4mm in height, that's enough to butt up against, whatever the stock dimension.
As for the use of the thread I was thinking along the lines of attaching my fence or bench cookies to them. There might be times where a jig could be attached as well. It's always nice to have options.

I have a dozen dogs from the Rip Dogs experiment (long post elsewhere on the FOG) and they are all 6MM head-height and threaded thru with M8-1.25. I use them constantly, wish I had made/kept more. My observations are:

1.  6MM height works fine for every use I have tried, never regretted not having a taller dog. I think you are safe having a single, low profile, dog as your stock inventory item.

2.  I am constantly finding new ways to bolt stuff to the dogs. I can insert the dog from below and screw down into them to fix something to the MFT. I also make fixtures that screw to 2 dogs from the top, then I can just slip them on and off the MFT top. Very handy in my opinion. The Festool Clamping Element knobs use the M8 thread, which is why I chose it.
