Just got my RAS yesterday and I'm tinkering with it prior to using it on site.  What's the best grinder disk to use with the fiberfix pad?

Thanks,

Jon

Jon, you may want to hit Dave Reinhold up. He mentions using that technique in his RAS coping video. He could probably help you out.

Congrats on getting the ras. You will absolutely love it if you cope with a grinder now. I just go to my big box store and use 50 grit for pine and soft wood and 24-36 for really hard wood. I would get an assortment and see what you prefer. I tend to use 50 grit the most as I feel I get the most control and don't eat the wood away to quickly.  Let me know if you have any other questions I think you'll really like the ras.

Is using a RAS better/faster than using a collins coping foot for jigsaw and coping that way?

That's an interesting question, Dan.  Maybe Dave and I can do some setup where he uses both tools on the same type of a scrap piece of molding while timed?  A video of course.

Bring it on Ken.  I'll supply the crown and give you time to practice and we will see who's faster and which joint comes out cleaner.  Your going down...

I was figuring since you're the one experienced coping with the RAS, I'd let you do the whole thing while I time you and eat popcorn.  Maybe a couple of Pina Coladas too.

Maybe we could do a 3-way comparison, the coping saw, the RAS and the jig saw with Collins foot.  Maybe I could just have another Pina Colada with the umbrella thingies.  [tongue]

Come on Ken, you scared??  I've had a Collins coping foot for my trion for a year and a half. Still never opneed it to try it. If you chicken out, I'll see what I can do about the video.

id love to see a video of this. not a shoot out as such but done at normal pace in real world conditions. do a nice baseboard into a slightly off inside corner.
do coping with a coping saw, ras,jig saws with coping foot and one mitered. a good comparison would be nice on time and quality

I just got a used RAS to try out for coping and scribing but unfortunately the pad that came on it is literally disintegrating.

Would I be better off buying the Stickfix soft pad or hard pad and using Festool sandpaper or the Fiberfix and use generic grinding disks?

I still can't figure out what to use when with this tool.

Thanks!

I would pick up the hard pad and the fiberfix pad. Use the fiberfix pad for coping and scribing and the hard pad for sanding. I use my ras for coping, scribing and when I need to remove a decent amount of material. I find I use it more then my belt sander.  When I first got my ras I only used it for coping, now I'm constantly reaching for it.  When you get more comfortable using it, you will find alot of uses for it.
