Best Sandpaper for less than 24hr shellac? Total Shellac Removal needed.

I exclusively use Cristal(Rubin ONCE in awhile) and I love it. I am now  in a situation where I have to quickly remove a  coat of shellac,  its less than 24 hrs, dry, but soft. I can tell you Cristal is definitely NOT the right sandpaper it  gums up the paper and just pushes the soft shellac around. It not the paper for the job at any speed or suction level.

I can look through the charts but,  would like to hear from someone who has used the paper and maybe has done a similar thing.

I'm no expert, but would it be possible for you to use denatured alcohol to soften the shellac and wipe most of it off before sanding off whatever remains?

Nickao, I am with Dick onthis. If gummy, I don't think you want to use a sandpaper.  A solvent of cleaner depending onwhether WB or alcohol. Or use cabinet scraper to strip it.

Well that is messy and honestly I just do not have time nor inclination. It does powder up white just like you would want when sanding in between coats, but total removal tends to gum up the paper really quick and I wasted 4 sheets on a 36 inch diameter. I think it is the heat build up from trying total removal.

I found a 36 Grit just blasted it right off with Saphir, but then I had so much sanding. I ordered a few higher grits of the Saphir and will try that the next time I screw up.

Thanks !

Try a spray bottle with alcohol.  Spray liberally, let it set for 3-5 minutes, wipe with steel wool, then a lint free rag.  You should be good to go.
