I guess it's all relative.  Bigger than the wood lathes I'm used to, but likely smaller than something someone else is used to.  I guess when things like oil rigs and titanic models must be brought to life, big tools are needed.

You're right about big being relative, my neighbor makes hydraulic pistons (among other things) for large equipment and has a few lathes that go to at least 15', but he didn't worm them into a basement [eek]. Something like that would be way cool to have in the home shop.

In the vid at around 4:45 he's pulling the unit along the floor on a thin dolly, any idea where to find things like that?
 
Those are machine skates.  You can buy them, just be ready to open your wallet way up.

Nice job of rigging.
