I was doing some routing tonight and went to remove a bit but it will not come out.

How do I get it out?  HELP!

I have had this happen with both of my PC routers.  (Interestingly, the smaller of the PC's seems to be the only router that allows the bit to slip down while i am using it)  I just take the entire collet nut and bit off.  I little WD-40 and a tap on the bit (the end that is inserted) with a dowel and it slips right out.

Looks like you have used two collects here ? Like the spring part. Or am I 'reading' this wrong ?

I'd probably clamp the bit in a wood vise and see it can be pulled out. Another way would be to grab the bit and then use a slide hammer. Hard to explain, but slide hammers have different kind of 'grabbers'.

Looks like a bearing fits that cutter. If so put the screw back in, tie a cord to the end of the cutter and a hammer to the other end of the cord, snap the cord away from the cutter with the hammer like you are pulling a loose tooth. With luck it should let go.

I have had this happen because of a worn circlip inside the collet nut. Another way for this to happen is that the collet nut was not fitted onto the collet before the cutter was inserted into the collet.

I checked and there is an 8mm and 1/4" collet.  I have the 8mm still in the box.  I may have missed something but don't think there are two collets.  I have removed the nut from the collet to help get the bit out.

I have sprayed WD-40 on the bit.  If I lock the spindle, the bit will turn in the collet with a wrench but will still not come out!

Any thoughts / help would be appreciated.  I don't care about saving the cutter, just want it out! [scared]

I'd tie a rag around the cutter then fasten a vice grip really tight on

the cutter and hit it with a hammer.

If you could use a vise and hold the router so the bit is pointing to the ground
I would do it like that.

Be careful, carbide's brittle.

Put the collet nut back on, place the router so you can get the nut supported from below and give the opposite side of the nut a sharp rap with a wrench or a hammer and a punch. The  bit should pop loose. Happens all the time, rust, grit or over tighten bit are the normal culprits.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas. I have pretty much tried them all and nothing has even moved the bit out of the collet.

I will be sending it off for repair. I have bought this router quite some time ago but never used it. I do remember that every time I did, the bit would get stuck. I will have them check it over at the same time.

On the service site, it states I have to return it to the original dealer?  Does that sound right?

Find the longest bolt that will fit the threaded part of the cutter. Put a washer and a small boxed in wrench on the bolt and tread it onto the bit. Tap the wrench with a hammer while pulling.
