Are you serious Bob, the first Festool saw sold in the states is now sitting in my office?  hmmmmmmm, might have to keep this one.

Sean,

Serious? ;) [blink] ;) No, only kidding; you have an old paperweight on your hands.  ;)I can swing by and get it off your hands and out of the way.
Kidding, that's the real deal.

Bob

Super cool, thanks for the info.  It's heading back to Lebanon right now for a revamp and then back to work.  If this isn't a testament to how unbelievably well made and engineered these tools are, I don't know what is.

Oooops,  my error - confirmed with Dave M - this may not be thee first saw, but certainly among the very, very first saws sold here.

Y'know what Bob, let's just forget you said that.  We'll roll with the first one ever theory.

Funny! Gotcha, Sean!

From what I hear, Festool service is so great, they'll probably look at that old saw and simply decide that you deserve a brand-spanking new saw.  [scared]

Ah, this brings back memories.

Based on the previous posts, I must have bought my ATF55 a few years before the new TS model came out.  The dealer convinced me to buy this expensive saw instead of a cheaper circular saw I intended to buy.  This was my first Festool.  I bought it to cut 6ft long plywood to make some cabinets.  I mitered the edges with the boards sitting on my garage floor.  Amazingly, they came out pretty darn straight (no tearout and burn free) and I was able to use masking tape to roll all the sides together.

While cutting I tripped the circuit breaker a few times before noticing the red light would come on just before the circuit tripped.  I quickly adjusted the feed rate and did not trip the circuit again.  Several months later I snagged the cord with my foot and knocked the saw off of my bench bending the sled.  I tried to bend the sled back but ended up making it worse., so I took it back to the dealer and explained what happened.  2 days later he called and said it was repaired.  He replaced the sled at no charge.  After that I became a Festool fan.  And I still use that saw and it still cuts straight as the day I bought it.

The ATF 55 was phased out in the Fall of 2005. I bought one then because he price was slightly discounted before the replacement model came in.
I have used the ATF it since then.

As I understand, my saw has  2 bearings on the motor shaft. The TS55 has 3 bearings. The old base was pressed steel, the new one has some kind of composite coating for easier gliding. The TS has the splinter guard. Not on the ATF 55. There might be slight power difference between the two models.

I bought my saw one Festool dealer, but have bought most items since from another in Georgia. Both of them advised me to keep what I have when asked if I would notice the difference from an upgrade. I have cut genuine 1-inch Birch ply and had no bogging down. I'm not in love with the dust hose connector interface. Otherwise, couldn't ask for more.
