I saw a write-up in my new copy of Fine Woodworking on a new Bosch drill. It is an 18 volt compact drill 7.5" long and weighing 3 pounds and featuring  1/2" chuck and a brushless motor. It comes with 2 batteries, charger, and soft case.

I'm a great fan of Festool drills( have 4), but this Bosch drill looks pretty darn good.

Anyone handled one?

What is the model number?

Bosch makes some good compact drills & they make some junk compact drills.

Also, I do not put any faith in anything Fine Woodworking writes about tools.

Sadly, I'm coming to the same opinion.  The reviews seem to be done without an appropriate range of products, an appropriate degree of thoroughness and without a good description of the test criteria.  [sad]

I would highly recommend having a look at the Makita BHP 481 (UK) or XPH07Z (US). It's a serious piece of cordless kit, burshless and only 205mm or 8".

It's quite heavy, but a perfect partner for the 10.8v tools for when the going requires a bit more power and heft.

I have an equivalent of this drill - just the one with the Hammer function on it. It is a very, very nice drill and the impact is great too. I also have Festool drills and like them too. Aside from not having the ability to add different chucks to configure the drill to the task and  lack of electronic chuck (it does the old grind when you reach the torque setting) it is a very nice drill. It is lightweight, brushless and the batteries last a long time. It is also pretty rugged with the body grip. It is a different battery platform to get into, but it is less cost than Festool's versions and so might be worth a look for someone just wanting a basic drill/driver.

I've got the IDH182 impact alas and it is an awesome tool. I mean to say an AWESOME tool. Most recently I was using 1/2" sockets to remove some older bolts from a motor. Really nice tool. I've tried the non hammer drill and it is a really nice drill but my T18 is the cats meow. I would undoubtedly go Bosch if I didn't have the Festool though.
