Bourbon, anyone?

Bob,

I really going to screw you up here——Lismore 21 scotch.

Tin Cup is pretty good, 10% of Starnahans rye whiskey is added to it.

Many years ago my father was a salesman for a liquor wholesaler and he sold enough "Jack" to win a trip to Lynchburg TN. and a tour of the distillery. They presented him with the deed to 1 square inch of land. I intend to build a very small house.

Funny, Laphroaigh (my fave Islay whiskey) did (do?) something similar: you’re deeded a patch of land on the island, measuring one foot square (which is 144 times what the Jack people ‘give away’…) and when visiting you get the free loan of a pair of wellingtons to wear when inspecting your land & upon return a dram of Laphroaigh (my guess that Scots being Scots, a dram is a minute amount of fluids).

OT: take care to stay away from the ‘limited edition’ and ‘special barrel’ stuff — way overpriced and of uneven quality; there is a lot of shady stuff going on with the likes of Pappy’s.

Cheese,

That Weller 107 should be a good, drinkable moderate priced bourbon...had it stayed in the barrel another 20 years it might be special but after the angel's share you might just have one or two good pours left!

Phew! Thanks guys. Seems there - as expected, lots of choices out there for a really good bourbon.

Actually I was at my friends house for a BBQ yesterday and turns out he did not have any bourbon on hand but one of the guests brought a bottle of Jack Daniels - with some type of honey flavoring. Since it was the only bourbon there I had a shot or two - certainly smooooooooooooooth, but I just don't like any type of added flavoring like that.

Soooooooooooooooo, I'm going to check out a few stores, see what's in stock and pick up a bottle or two - one a more speacial occasion bourbon, the another a better than good "everyday" bottle.

As you start experimenting with different ones, a great use of the ones don't like as much is to make a mule with it.  Fill a tall glass with ice, half or more with Ginger Beer (I like using Gosling Ginger beer), as much or little of bourbon you like, then juice from 1/2 a lime to taste.  It's a great drink for the summer when striaght bourbon is a bit much.

Bob,

You’ll need to get a glencrain glass to truly enjoy the whiskey. The shape of the glass allows you, to get the aroma of the whiskey as your tasting it. Tumblers are fine for mixed drinks, not so good for neat tastings.

Once you put the whiskey in the glass, twirl it a little and look at the film on the glass, give it a taste. Now add a drop or two of water (break the whiskey) twirl it around you’ll notice a major change in the film, give it a taste, it will be smoother.
