Building a Kapex work center tutorial

Hi all,

I added two new tutorials to my web site yesterday that may be of interest.  One discusses the building of a Kapex work center and the other setting up a drill press center using the new design Delta 20" VS drill press and the MFT3/Kapex table.  Both are available for free download from my web sitehttp://jerrywork.com.  From the home page click on "tutorials", then scroll through the list.  Click on either the picture or the description.

I am experimenting with different levels of compression for these downloadable .pdf files so the tutorials are at all different levels of compression.  The more they are compressed the smaller the .pdf file and the faster it downloads, but the image quality suffers accordingly.  The less compression, the larger the files, the longer the download and the better the image quality.  Let me know your preference.  Thanks.

Jerry

I enjoyed the new tutorials very much, Jerry, thank you.

Personally, I prefer the larger PDFs with more clarity in the photos. Most people are on faster connections these days, so I don't think size matters as much as it once did.

And for those operating on slower connections, I would think that the better quality would still make it worth the extra time for the download.

Jerry that is a great collection of very interesting and useful tutorials!

Thank you so much for going to all the effort required to produce them
and share them with everyone.

My opinion is bigger is better when it comes to photos.

Thankyou Jerry,

I concur with Joraft. I'm on a slow connection but the higher quality files are preferred.
A picture worth a thousand words and all...

Jerry thanks for the Kapex Work Centre article.  I very much doubt that I will every justify purchasing a Kapex (or any other powered miter saw for that matter) but, if one ever falls into my lap, I will set it up in my shop much as you have shown.

I have a fast line and will always opt for pictures with more quality and less compression.

Jerry,

Thanks for sharing.

Two quick questions:

1) Is the keyless chuck on the new DP standard or aftermarket? If aftermarket,  do you mind sharing which one it is (Is it the Jacobs?)?
2) Which aftermarket lazer did you use? I know Woodcraft has a $40 jobber...but not sure if that's the one....

Thanks again!

Hi Doug,

The DP comes with a keyed chuck.  This one I have had for quite a while and has no brand or country of origin markings other than what might be LD or LP.  The lettering is highly stylized and is between the range markings in metric and those in imperial.  Range is 3 to 26mm.  It runs straight and true but that is about all I can tell you.  No matter who makes the keyless chuck, my suggestion is to make sure you can return it if it does not run true in your machine.  The aftermarket laser is from Woodcraft.  Not great by any means but seems to work ok once you get it aimed properly.  It comes with a nice alignment pin that you place in the chuck and turn it so a line running parallel down the length of the shaft points to the lasers.  By rotating the lasers one at a time you can get them to line up on that mark so where they cross does not change with the height of the table.  Glad you find the short tutorials helpful.

Jerry,

Well, you've gotten me more excited by the Kapex. I've got a 12" Bosch with its huge stand and basically have no space (or shop). Everything has to be stored somewhere and I'm thinking that the Kapex will better meet my needs than the Bosch. I'll probably go with the table or the Sawhelper setup for the same portability/storage reasons.

Once again, nice shop! Sherry and I would still love to visit one of these times that we're making a run that direction.

I vote for the high resolution pictures.  ;D

Thanks for sharing,

Mike

Hi Mike,

It would be a pleasure to have you (or any other FOGers) stop by if your travels take you in this direction.  Glad you found the short tutorial helpful.

Later today I will repost the latest two tutorials in the less compressed format so the pics will show up as higher resolution.

Thanks Jerry,

I'll reprint them as soon as that happens. I'm building a scrapbook of my favorite things............

Jerry,

Thanks again for taking the time to include the better photos. Much clearer. I truly appreciate the time you took to do it.

I tried to open the file and it said "This file is damaged and can't be repaired".  Is it me or the file?

Jerry,

thanks for taking the time to put that together it was very intresting and helpful!  what a clean shop floor you have!!

I and getting my painter busy so I can get the kapex in the 1st.  what I mean by that is I keep me and my helper very busy doing my daily carpentry stuff. and I have a full time painter that I keep busy doing painting jobs.  so the profit from that venture goes into my festool account! and is sent directly to festools bank account in germany and in turn they send my tools!

but I like the fact that I can put the saw on my miter saw setup in my shop and butt it up againt the window.  my dewalt 8 1/2 slider sticks out about 32 inches due to the slider. and it gets in the way of squeezing by my unisaw!

so bring it on!
