Any thoughts on what would cause this?  Unit was bought in 2015, but has only had very occasional use (few times a year on small sanding projects).  Wouldn’t there be a fuse/breaker that would’ve tripped before it got to this point?  What part(s) would be my best place to start replacing?  Would you assume the board is fried?

Hi, I would not assume anything yet, just a guess a loose connection which began arcing, because you say low usage. you can hot wire to see if it runs. edit, loose connection could be on ground in the circuit, i.e cord wall plug etc, so it found the path of least resistance @ that point, btw welcome to the fog.guy

That kind of localized damage means the problem was the connection itself.  A failure somewhere else would have caused damage somewhere else.

If you ever happen to have a machine apart, and you see slight browning on any terminals, FIX THEM.  They eventually turn into this.  No way you could have known this would happen.
