Buying reconditioned tools

First post but that's because the search function brings up so many very good answers to questions that I don't have to ask them myself!

I would like to know which dealers that participate in the reconditioned sale are easily accessible for ordering, provide conformation of the order, and then followup with a tracking number once it's available.

I've been trying to deal with one dealer here who has an excellent rep but his response to me has been sporadic at best.  I've got one item ordered and paid for but no idea when delivery will be, one item supposedly ordered but no credit card charge and I'd like to order another item but no response.

Not interested in saying who because I have no idea what might be going on.  He's got a very high rep here so I might just be the exception to the rule for him.

I have to agree that I found the reconditioned ordering process not the most fun and a bit frustrating. When I first called I was told there were lots of those but we can only take your order later - at which point it was sold out.

I ended up ordering two different items from different stores (my dad wanted to take my first order).

Both orders were just fine overall.

My order from Tools for Working Wood in Brooklyn was easy and I received an email confirmation shortly after placing the order.

My other order was fine and but no confirmation. I knew it went through later that night due to myups account which showed the scheduled delivery date).

Enjoy the tools.

I have ordered with Bob Marino during the past 2 recon sales. Quick replies and no problems. I don't recall if I got UPS shipping confirmation but that's not as big a deal for me. All in all I was pleased with the process and with Bob's service. I also had good follow up service direct from Festool with a very minor issue on my recon Domino XL.

My 2 tools showed up today.  Fortunately we were having something else delivered so we were looking for UPS.  I don't like not knowing the tracking number because where we live I certainly don't want boxes sitting on the porch for hours on end.

Ordered from Festool Nirvana today.  Everything was handled in minutes along with a conformation email and a second one later on when Festool confirmed that I had gotten both items in my order.  Ended up ordering a second sander because I wasn't sure that the first one had gone through and I didn't want to miss it.  Two hours later the first sander showed up at my door so now I'll have two.  I guess I should be able to find someone local to buy it and get my money back.

DQtools, will myups show tracking for any package that's being delivered to my address automatically without me having to enter a tracking number?

BTW, The drill I got was 20% off and looks to be in excellent condition.  The sander looks like it probably should have been in the 30% off category instead of 20% off but I don't know what the insides look like so maybe there is less wear and tear on it then it looks.

Greg M. Once you have the My UPS account setup it shows all scheduled deliveries to your address without having to enter any tracking numbers. It should be free as I don't recall ever paying anything, just spending a few minutes to enter my address and info.

What sander did you get 2 of?

RO125 in the classic systainer.  First classic I've been able to handle and the T-loc, imo, is a much better design.

This is where having a relationship with a dealer really helps. I have a local dealer that has been good to me, he's not the nearest, but I like working with them.

When the recon sale was announces, I immediately sent him an email saying "get me one of these." He secured the parts I wanted and was kind enough to extend me the credit to come down the next day to pay for it.

So your local dealer who knows your face and be a great asset. If your local dealer couldn't care less about you, then get a new local dealer. If your having trouble finding a great dealer near you, PM Shane and he can probably connect you with their rep who knows your area. This is how I found my dealer. Saulius the Festool rep in my area pointed me in that direction.

This is saying nothing bad about the one line guys. I love Bob, Sean, and all the rest, but I make sure the local knows who I am.

  Hello Greg,

I just read your post on the FOG and I’d like to apologize for some of the frustration you have had with the recon program. But let me offer not excuses, but some type of explanation. I have been a participating the in Festool recon program every single time Festool has offered it. Most dealers chose not to participate in the recon program for a variety of reasons – one of which is that it generally requires the dealers to have immediate access to a computer to check availability, take your info and place that order. This must be done within the 30 minutes Festool gives us  to “hold” your order.  The  dealer does not call Festool and place the order, this is a manual entry ordering system. * I think CPO may have an automatic online order system for the Recon Tools? If so, kudos to them. This can be at times  a very frustrating way of operating a program for customers as well as dealers.

I am pretty much a one man band when it comes to RECON TOOL order taking, there is no other person to answer the phone and take your order. So many times I am on the road, at a meeting, doing a demo, or simply doing something as basic as food shopping, or as what happened yesterday  morning -  out of good phone connectivity for about an hour or so. I  called you as soon as I was able to yesterday and was pretty straight forward with you – I would not be able to get to an area to place your order in a timely enough manner to ensure that your order would be locked in, the same thing happened regarding a customer wanting the KAPEX saw yesterday morning; I simply had to ask you both to call another participating dealer – which is a painful thing for a dealer to do, but the only honest thing I could do. No dealer wants to forfeit a sale to another dealer, but again, as soon as I was able to respond, I did. Later in the day, I would and did have full access for taking calls and ordering. It’s a question of timing.

Having said that, I have literally emailed and taken Recon Tool orders at 1 am and 6 am. My cell phone is my business phone and I take calls 7 days a week, sometimes after 11pm EST and way before 9 AM, which is not to suggest that an email or phone message does not (rarely) get lost or even not answered; perfection is still an elusive but worthy  goal. Not too other many dealers have such availability.

As regards not having your card charged right away, well again, I am a one man band. Here’s what happens – I take the order over the phone, I enter the order with Festool, I print up the order and fax or call it over to my fulfillment company later that day or the next day – as time allows, so my customers may not see a charge that day or even day 2. I just don’t have that manpower to immediately charge the card on these orders as do most dealers.  I would rather have the order placed and worry about getting the card charged later, then wait until I can be in that position to charge immediately and thus risk losing that item to the clicking 30 minute clock.
So, I’m sorry this did not go as smoothly as both of us would have liked and I will put om my thinking cap and see how response time and notifications can be improved.

Bob

Bob- you took my order at 730 AM CST so that is 630 AM for you and you were really busy, MY order went through and I even got the item before I got shipment notification or my credit card was charged, YEP I was playing with my festoys before I even paid! That is some great customer service. I know it is hard to turn away business however as you said it is the right thing to do.

Thanks again for my order.

You must be thinking of someone else...when I tried placing an order for the recon T15 drill set with them (after you had to decline due to the above circumstances), they informed me they do not even participate in the recon sale.

Ooops, I guess for sure I was wrong then! I wonder if they did so last year? Anyhow, I hope you were able to get the tool you asked for from another dealer.

Bob,
I figured I was the exception rather then the rule and that's why I didn't name you.  My order showed up yesterday and fortunately we were already watching for UPS so instead of 1 package showing up there were 3.  Where I live I need a tracking number so that I can make sure that the package doesn't sit on my front porch in plain view on a busy street with a questionable apartment complex around the corner, if you know what I mean.

When I could get ahold of you I was pleased with your service.  I try and give my customers top notch service but sometimes no matter how hard I try things happen.  I was nervous about the 1400 router disappearing so I wanted to get someone quickly.  How was I to know that it would still be available.

There are other tools that I would like to get but I told my wife I'd keep it under $4000 and I past that $1k ago [scared]  On my next flip house if it needs sheetrock work done I'll be calling you for that $1800 package [big grin]  That will then be considered part of the remodeling budget!

Regarding buying reconditioned tools online... Dealers aren't able to accomplish this easily because they would need to integrate our real-time inventory into their website to know whether a product is available for the customer. Then, they would need to place that order with us very quickly to make sure of availability.

To my knowledge, there has only ever been one dealer who has integrated our inventory into their website and they are no longer a dealer at this time. For them, I made a web service available that they could use to poll our system for availability.

So, basically, you need to order by phone with your dealer.

Does Festool notify the buyer when the recon tool is shipped?

Yes, I received shipping notification directly from Tool Technics for my recon tools

Edit: on second thought, I believe it was a UPS notification, that said a package had been shipped by Tool Technics..  Signing up for my UPS might be the key here.

To the best of my knowledge, we are not sending shipment notifications. I know for a fact that we didn't during previous reconditioned tool sales. But, as was stated, dealers have access 24/7 to tracking information.
