I have a C12 with 2x nicad and 1 bigger li-ion.  I have the 3 chucks (but not the drywall chuck), and a wide variety of drills and bits.

I'm pondering putting the C15 on my christmas list, but wanted to keep the cost down, if I could.

If I get the C15, do I need to re-buy the chucks, or can I keep the old ones, and get the simplest C15?

What about batteries?  I would assume the 15v version just would not run as well with 12v batteries. (if at all)

You are correct!

The older chucks and batteries work with the newer drills.

Wouldn’t using 12 V batteries on C-15 defeat the whole purpose of having C-15 in the first place?

All the Batteries are compatible if they do fit to the drill mechanically. You can use an 12 V Lion Battery on an T15/ C15 or T18+3. But not the other way round, It will not fit mechanically to the drill, that is on purpose, a Festool sales rep. told me on an fair at a local tool store.
