Can I use one of my sanders to simulate rubbing out varnish?

I've got an ETS 150/3 and dts/400.

If yes, what accessories would  I need, pad type, abrasives etc. and what setting?

Probably going to be making some chairs soon and I really like the look of varnish on white oak.

Thanks

Ive used mirka abranet pads on my ets/ec 150/5 for this on big flat surfaces. They come in various grits, i have 360, 500 and 1000. 500 and 1000 works great for polishing varnishing. I lube the pad with a 50/50 blend of mineral spirits and mineral oil. Then wipe it all off with paper towels after.

However i generally prefer polishing by hand, unless its a large surface like a dining table. For chairs i wouldnt be using a power tool.

I’ve used a RO 90 with Platin 500/1000/2000 & 4000 on headlight covers, pretty much the same process. It worked well.

Try adding in the RO 90 with a hard felt pad and MPA 5000 followed by a soft felt pad and MPA 8000.  Also spray down between grits with a 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol and water, and wipe with a clean microfiber cloth.  Headlight lenses get smooth as a baby's bumper!  Mo' bettah good, yah?

Good additional info Sparky...I am remiss...I should have added I also used some white foam pads with Meguiar polish and then some Meguiar sealant...sweet.

However, I rather like your approach better. Jettison the Meguiars and embrace the Festool stuff.

thanks I'll give the suggestions a try.

Should I lower the speed settings? For sanding I have everything dialed as high as it will go.

Use it in Rotex mode at high speed with Granat, then drop the speed to no more than half (3) when you switch to Platin and the MPAs.  Use your dust extractor at no more than 1/3 power while on Granat and Platin, then turn it completely off when you switch to the MPAs.
