captive screw/bolt?

There's a fastener/accessory I'm looking to order but I can't think of the term at the moment.  It's basically a thin rubber washer or ring that you add onto the end of a bolt so that you can hold it captive in a hole that is larger in diameter than the fastener, out of which it would otherwise fall.  I guess an EPDM washer might work (assuming the threads of the bolt bite into the rubber portion of the washer), but the specific thing I was thinking of is not full washer size, but almost like a thin rubber band that fits tightly around the bolt.

Does anyone know what I'm thinking of?

Don’t know but heatshrink would probably work.

Just use an o-ring slightly undersized to the shaft size of the panel screw you are trying to use.

My guess is you’re referring to plastic bolt retainers.

Most toilet bolt kits come with them to hold the t-bolt in place as you set the toilet.

O-rings work also, they take more room and may affect bolt torque to yield.

I’m old enough to remember (but not old enough to have lost my mind [eek]) the Metal retainers installed at the factory to retain the brake drums on vehicles. We called the "factory throw aways".

I use a cone washers/ball cock washer to retain part of the Festool clamp in the 1 1/2" thick workbench top.

[member=4105]tjbnwi[/member] and [member=44099]Cheese[/member] Thanks -- those both will work too, and actually allow the bolt to have more play in a larger hole than an O-ring.  I have some O-rings and EPDM washers set to arrive tomorrow -- if those don't work, I'll try these other methods.
