Hi all.

I am just about to start a project building a set of carriage doors out of Western Red Cedar.

The doors will be appox 7' x 3.5'. I was wondering if three or maybe four 14x140 dominos in place of a traditional tenon and mortice would be sufficiently strong to join the rails and stiles?

Thanks in advance.

I have had the XL for a while now but have not used just dominos to make a full size door yet. So far on doors I have used the XL to cut the mortices in the stiles and put traditional tenons on the rails. I am sure it would be fine and have seen the videos of people doing it but for me it is the cost and hassle of any comeback if there is a problem which has put me off.

I am just on with making a pair of framed and boarded curved top gates, each gate 6' high x 6' wide and I am using the XL to cut a large mortice in both the stiles and rails then making a loose tenon to go in, there is a video somewhere of Peter Parfitt doing this. It will be a good test for the XL and if the gates fall apart it doesn't matter because they are for my drive  [unsure]

Sorry that doesn't really answer your question.

I've built several doors with the 14mm dominoes and no problems at all in fact it's so fast.
This is a test rail.

I made some doors out of pine for a customer last year 36" x 80. I used 2 Dominos for the top rail, 2 for the center rail and 3 for the larger bottom rail. The doors are only 1 year old but are as solid as can be.

I do take the time to make sure the glue is spread inside the mortise and on the Domino as well as at the mating surfaces of the rails and stiles themselves. I clamp everything tight and leave the clamps on for at least a couple of hours. I'm making another 20 doors this winter for another customer and I will use the same technique.

Ok, I am convinced, the next door I make I will only use dominos, it will be a lot quicker.

Thanks, Doug

Just to divert the thread slightly -- was wondering if people found the DF500 with the 10mm cutter sufficient for doors, or would you not even consider that?  Was thinking about replacing one of the doors in my house, but I'm not about to run out and get the 700.

I think that the depth would the problem. With the 700, the depth is quite a bit deeper. 28mm vs 70mm.

Cheers. Bryan.
