Carvex dust collection

Well, I got the thing along with the accessory kit. Great tool..fits my simple needs perfectly.

There is one thing that doesn't seem to work however. I cannot attach the dust collection port to the guide rail base. It fits in only a little way (and that is a struggle) and leaves a big gap inside the base prior to reaching the front of the machine. That gap means that it is sucking air prior to the area where the blade is. This is in contrast to when it is attached to the normal base.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

Peter

Mine was like that, too.  Wiggled it in then after that it was just fine.  For the other bases, there's that locking tab that holds it in place.  On the guide rail base, it's friction fit so it is snug.

As Paul said it is a bit tight , when it's all the way in the locking tab is about 1 inch from the back of the base.

This is as far as I can get it. Notice the big hole where air will be sucked in prior to the cavity around the blade. The dust collector port shape seems to want to fit  tight to the guide rail base without that gaping hole.

Engineering wise it just doesn't seem right.

That looks like it is as far as it goes.

If you look inside, the tangs have a definite stopping point.

Tom

It goes further than in Peters pic. Give it a firm push , as when you first push it in it stops as in the pics .There should be no gap

Here's how mine looks from the front at an angle:

and from the side:

The side image shows the little protuberance in the same place as yours. The front angle image shows the gap the OP noticed.

The opening on the top of the dust chute is required to get around the lower blade guide mount when used with the standard base.

That is as far as mine goes in also. You are correct that the tangs have a recessed stop on the guide rail base.

Now, connect it to the vac. Put your finger close to the "gap" and compare the suction developed there with the suction  closer to the blade. There is very little, if any suction close to the blade and a great deal of it in the gap.

That makes no sense to me. It is as if one punched a 3/4 inch hole in the vac hose.

With the dust collector in the standard base there is a lot of suction near the blade.

Obviously I must be missing something here.

Cheers,

Peter

Definitely weird , the tangs at the back look to be relative to mine but there is definitely no gap between the base and the dust collection tube under were the jigsaw connects to the base on my jigsaw.

Do you have the 400 or the 420?

Tom

The 400 , but as far as I am aware the bases are the same as  is the dust collection chute

I bought the carvex 420 barrel grip and the ergonomics and mechanical aspects of the saw seem excellent to me so far.  You nailed that!  But the angle base and now the guide rail base have no and poor (?) dust collection, respectively?  Is this true?  I was just getting ready to buy accessories and am concerned the circle cutter attachment (prime reason I bought the saw) which uses the guide rail base has no/poor dust collection?  Is this true Festool?  I've drank the green kool-aid and love all my festools but these shortcomings (?) don't fit with the systems approach that is unique to you.  Am I missing something with what I am reading about the angle base and guide rail base lack of dust collection?  I am still in my 30 day trial period and it would help me evaluate its worth to me.  Many thanks.

The guide rail base - also used with the circle cutter - does allow for dust collection.  There are images above in this thread.  The adjustable angle base does not have a provision for dust collection.

Thanks, Peter.  I get that the guide rail base "allows" for it;  this thread though seems to be saying the dust collection port does not fit/work well on the guide rail base.  I am trying to understand if that is  a real or perceived problem.  Can any tell help me understand that?  Thx!

The port slides in well.  It doesn't lock like it does on the standard base, but mine is snug.

The design of that base actually moves the dust collection opening closer to blade than the standard base.

Frank,

Sorry I didn't post a link.  Your review has provided so much info and it should be read by anyone on the fence about a Carvex IMHO.
