Hi there,

I have just got a new Carvex and have a few newbie questions that I can't seem to find using Google.

1.  How long typically does a wood carving blade last?  How do you know when to replace it?

2.  The splinterguard.  If you are using one blade and then switch out the splinter guard and blade for another splinter guard and blade, can you go back to the original blade and still use the 1st splinter guard or do you need to use a new one?

Thanks for any response.  I appreciate it.....Dave

Unfortunately there are so many variables that there's no standard answer to your questions.

The best judgement is to get a "good" understanding of how a fresh blade cuts and then determine when it's deteriorated enough to replace it. Different people have different tolerances in terms of what they'll accept.

It' a similar situation with the splinter guards ... but they're cheap, so don't be too stingy [wink]

Kev gave some good answers.  One aspect of the clear splinter guards that some might not realize is that there are two positions for them.  If you need to get a little more life out of them you can push them in a little more than the standard install position.

With the power switched off I feel the blade for sharpness in the wear area.  This is then compared to sections of the blade that have not been cutting wood.  Alternatively, it could be compared to a new blade.
