I was talking to a festool representative the other day as I was interested in buying a Carvex.
I asked him why it comes with so much stuff that you dont need in everyday use.
He said the designers wanted to show off what they can do. Which is quite an impressive for a jig saw.

Then he said that there is a plan to bring out a simpler version in Autumn.
Which I interpret means also cheaper.

So if there are any of you out there thinking of sinking your cash in a Carvex and your old saw will hold out a few months longer.
It might just pay to wait.

Here's hoping this come true
 
In Australia you can buy the Carvex and it's accessory kit individually. After all, they're in separate systainers.

Is it any different in Europe? ... I'm a little confused  [blink]
 
Yes the Carvex comes in two parts here as well.
Its just that you are buying a lot of stuff with the accessory kit , which depending on your work load might not be necessary.

So as I understand from the quick chat I had there is an idea to bring out a simplified version.
I guess this means less bits, more like a basics version.

I was very impressed by how much lighter the Carvex is to the Mikita or Bosch I tried. Good use of materials
 
Whenever I decide to fork up the cash for a Carvex, I'm going for the full kit. I'll probably won't be using much of the accessories, but it's another festool toy in a systainer, so I figure it is good for me somehow.. :)
 
The bigger question may be, will the newer, lighter ???, faster, cheaper, less expensive, version be any better than the current offering.

I mean, did they go back to the drawing board to resolve the issues that have plagued it since its release; and by extension, stopped it from coming to this side of the pond...

What's the latest projected ETA update of the Carvex in NA? Even an educated guess will do. Thanks.

Just to add some extra salt to this, in the latest issue of woodworker's journal there is a nice picture of a carvex in use on one of the projects.
And please don't read the sander review...
 
I've now read through a dozen threads on the Carvex starting from 2010 and ending with this one and unfortunately I cannot decipher from the back-and-forth flowing "it's broken by design" to "it was broken by design only before 07/2010" to "it's indefinitely postponed for NA for undisclosed reasons" if the jigsaw is  ???

a) an actually working machine worth buying today
b) only had a rotten batch in early 2010 and was subsequently fixed (blade & base problems)
c) is still running the same broken design as in 2010 and postponed because Festool does not dare to sell it in the US because of known faults

From reading the various posts about failures with Carvex's it seems that there have been about a half-dozen very loudly debated failures reported, but since I have no way of knowing what sort of percentage of Carvex owners here represent that information does not help me in evaluating the real failure rate of Carvex jigsaws.

What I'd like to understand is:
- Is it worth ebaying my trusty predecessor to Makita 4351FCT jigsaw to get a Carvex instead to play better in the Festool system & get the special bases and CMS-plate for it?
- Will the current model be free of the reported failures of the 2010 model?
- How can I tell which one is of a known good batch since they might have stood a while at the retailers?
- Has anyone actually used the Carvex in a CMS?

Anyone got fresh insight on this with a Carvex bought maybe even in the 2012's?

I'm really into this set of questions ... I've recently purchased a CARVEX and all of the paraphernalia in the accessory systainer - but I've had little chance to use it.

I'd love to know the precise set of "succeed or fail" attributes that define the difference between a good and bad CARVEX !

Kev, if your Carvex blade doesn't wander all over the place then i would say you have a good one.  A good test for it would be trying to scribe a couple of mill off the edge of a board.  I tried this on a sheet of chipboard flooring with disastrous results.  the blade just wouldn't stay in the v guide & there was sparks coming from it.
 
i bought a carvex off ebay the other day came with all accessories £330, biggest waste of money ever, its a pile of    , it wanders where ever it wants

 
I would stay miles away from any used Carvex's that already appear on ebay and such, probably not a good sign
 
I am unclear how the problems I have been reading about with the Carvex are specific to NA/Canada? With every problem I have read about so far I would be unhappy regardless of the country I lived in.

They all seem tool design specific and completely unrelated to country to be sold in.

Somehow the NA/Canada region seems to have found an extra issue with it.

I don't know if we've found a fault that other countries haven't.  I'd guess is that we are perceived to be more demanding of flawless tools at Festool's price point than other places in the world.  In other words, we're picky, complainers or maybe even crybabies when things aren't just "perfect". [tongue] [big grin]
