Hello!

This is another job I am on at the moment!    Going to have cedar cladding around the out side and having Western white Glulam beams shame they didnt wait for the Douglas Fur to match the Cedar Cladding which is going ontop!   Cedar Facia and barge board.    Was going to be Douglas fur stairs but might be altered!   I did a quick sketch up of the stairs its not right but you get an idea.

Man this job has been a headache!  Honestly I kinda become tired of the job.   I have had to search source and design and think about everything!

Well any way so many things have changed from the drawing that the drawing is off no use at all!

we discussed if to use Oak or Glulam I researched Glulam and tried to get Douglas Fur glulam but its a 3 weeks waiting for Douglas fur and European white wood is like within a week!  Well it was arranged almost 2 weeks ago now, I cant go back as I have this other job for 2 weeks so they could of had the Douglas fur!  So the Glulam is now sitting their for no reason!     Any way the Glulam is much much deeper than on the original plans when it was going to be Oak.     So I came up with a solutions to reduce the overall depth!  but they aint having it!  (Drawing below later to show what the overall depth is going to be!)

The Glulam beams all nicely rapped up!

JMB what you are doing is called moving up the value chain.. which is a good thing, keep this up and whilst it might be a headache now, you will look back and be greatful for these experiences and great projects. Being able to do the design, build, connected elements such as the steels only builds your value up to future clients.

This is exactly where british tradesmen fall down, no one whats to take end to end responsibility and then thinks fall between the cracks, design and detail suffer through lack of coherent design. Trust me, if you are willing to take on these things, people will pay a premium.

Question to you is what is your aspiration? (I mean that as a question, not a criticism)

This looks like a great project to be working on.. even if it does require lost of homework!

Yeah I came from the job to day  and do some research on treating the Glulam beams as they are seen and I am worried where the veluxes are going to be and where the sun can shine on them it might cause dem to discolour.  So I want something which keeps them looking exactly the same but protects them from UV.

I would like to build up and have my own big jobs. At the moment I have my own small jobs which are fine and work for builder but I would like to let's say build my own houses or extensions which are more like this job different not just plain simple house bashing.   I would like to get my work shop built and that become part of the business to produce more unique and higher end stuff. Custom built!  So I want to be workshop and site best of both worlds.

The only thing which is making me hesitate is UK don't wanna start talking politics but the future of UK ain't looking so bright if the boarders stay open soooo I have been thinking long and hard to move to OZ like alot of Brits already have which I believe for the very same reason.  Any way if I do decide to move I don't want to of invested a lot of money in the workshop my mate is going in 2weeks to work in OZ for 1 or 2years he has begged for me to come with but I have a client base I don't wanna loose just yet.  So I'll see what he think of working over in OZ

i know this is off topic ( but this is jmb thread so the boundries are fairly wide)
my cousin is a fully qualified sparky for a few years . he went to oz for a year and a bit . he could have stayed for the full 2 but couldnt find a desent job. he had a few bits at the start but then ended up picking fruit and other similar jobs. he couldnt make it pay for him to stay.
on the upside he met the love of his life over there [big grin]

Oi stay on topic!  Only joking!  Haahaa

Well I recon my mate will do the same!  I think one of his reasons for leaving cus his love off his life dumped him when she went to uni  and he took it hard!  He went to OZ with his family to visit family over der on his own as she was suppose to come with her he payed for hee flights but she dumped him a month before he went to OZ for a month.  When he came back he had changed and had his heart set on working on OZ for 1 2 years as he has family who are in the trade over der.  His words where he has no reason to stay in uk any more.  I kept telling him it's only a girl you will find another but this one was he longest relationship he had.

My mate went over on a 6 month visa with 2 or 3 others.  20 months later they are still there, never been home.  He is now applying for citizenship.  He loves it there & is earning a fortune compaired to back home.  I think its the lifestyle out of work that they like.

If i was a bit younger !!!!!

Haaahaa excuses excuses not that old or are your old man?  [tongue]!

I recon my mate would be the same he will find a bird he likes and he wouldn't wanna come home we will see..

Readin and looking at sites and watchin TV it seems like your live more than you work so more family time more your own time. Unlike here in uk it's work work work. You live to work.

That's for sure but I'm sure Justin could give his opinion.  Sometimes the grass is not always greener.

Oh, its not so much the age but the family.  When you have a wife & 2 boys then its not so easy, as i am sure you will find out one day  [tongue]

Well... there are a lot of people with the same intrest in this topic lol [big grin].

At first JMB, as always I like your work and way of documenting your jobs a lot! Looks really nice. If you stay on this track
I know you will get your workshop and bigger jobs [big grin]. I have seen a number of carpenters in my area who worked the same
way you do, and now have 4 employees or more and a BIG workshop lol haha!

And second, I don't know where "OZ" is [embarassed] but I'm thinking about working in an other country too. Since the
borders are open, Holland is flooded with carpenters from all over europe [unsure]. and there aren't much buildingsites
at this moment....  [sad]

Cheers!  I just now need to get the jobs finished so I can make pictures of the finished result but at the moment im working on all of them at the same time!  Just come from another one 2 day 7oclock!  Help renovating a house.  I have fitted his kitchen all downs stairs flooring skirting architrave almost finished hes trying to do it all him self hes a plaster same age as me but the joinery im doing though.  Hes keeping the doors and frames and is sanding them down even though I did suggest replacing them as it will take him ages and I think he wish he had now!    I gotta do his front Porch aswell!

Any way Im have come to a big Dilemma to day!   I have been torn between 2 jobs which they both want me on the exact same time!   Both jobs I do not want to loose!

This one Cedar/Glulam and this other one i started last week and im working on tomoro and saterday which is a complete decking with Cedar and gazebo made with cedar aslo.    Its 7meters long and 4.2 meters wide me and my mate who is similar ago 2 me  we made two large semi circules radias 2.1  as its an oval shape decking.

EDITED:  Just spoke to the builder of this job he finally gave in and said he will try and push the job along and but ill have to come next week to do the job so this other job wont clash with this one the fallowing week!  Few!  Still get to keep both jobs  unfortunately I gotta now let a few other people which are smaller jobs down oh well!  im happy again!

JMB

Sounds like its a very bussy! Yeah 2 jobs at the same time is always a dilemma, I'm actually always a bit anxious for that. You never know what is te best to do. If you thoose 1 you just know the other job cant wait.

I'm working on a sort of indoor garages for 18 appartments. About 450 square meters of lime-sandstone glue work and 18 door placements. A booring job, but it makes money [wink].

the 2 first doorframes.... the metal U-shaped tubes are for the brickwork.

Cheers René

Hey JMB!

"Hahah well the gunpowder nailhammer isn't mine actually, its from the company I work for. Hilti is if you ask me the
best devise in its class. It shoots nails in basically everything from wood to concrete and steel (prefab concrete can be a problem with the high density). If I can i use it every day, works like a charm!!

Groetjes René

Found another picture of the divice on my cellphone [cool], it's also really handy for attaching lead and EPS insulation!

Stop Stop Stop!    LoL  Dont tempt me I was going to buy one about a year or more ago the exact one your showing now  DX 460 MX Powder-actuated tool with magazine

Just thought do I really need it but every so often when fixing wood to steel and im their bolting them to the steel drilling holes in the steel I think DAM wish I had the DX460 now.

When I researched like you said the DX seems to be the best one money can buy  as it can shoot to most types of nails and sizes in its class
