Centrotec - Your Choice Your Convenience - The Video

Nice video.  Thanks for sharing.

Personally I like the Centrotec setup and have one of the installers kits to go along with a couple Festool drills.  I do however like having the ability to switch to Jacobs when I need a bit the installers kit does not have.

I've never used  my centrotec. Tried  my normal hex bits  in it once and they  didn't fit.
And have always wondered why  its an odd size.

I suspect  you're tied with  the  festool  kit.
I have the trend quick  chucks.

It's different so it can work better.
Sometimes a design only needs to be a little different to function a lot better.

The trend is different too. [big grin]

The festool  off set chuck takes  the  standard hex bits.

Yes,  when I need a little precision . . . . . .

[size=8pt]2 9/16in Magnetic Bit Holder with quick release collar enables use of standard bits with Centrotec Chuck. The Centrotec shank is designed for use with the Festool Centrotec System, as well as with all standard or keyless chucks for no-slip performance. The Centrotec System was designed to provide a seamless transfer of force, eliminating bit slippage or marring of the drill bit. The weight of the drill is reduced by nearly ½ pound, and the length is reduced by nearly 1-1/2” with the Centrotec System. Most importantly, the Centrotec system offers a quicker and more secure means of bit change than any other quick-change chuck system.

Adapts all standard bits to the quick change capability of the Centrotec System
Magnetic insert holds your bits securely in place to prevent loss
Quick release spring tensioned system secures bits during use
Long, precision milled hex shank eliminates wobble, or run out during use

'Tied'? No! - horses for courses!
But as the Video says - 'Your Choice, Your Convenience'. [big grin]

I thought through things quite a lot when I bought my centrotec bits, didn't buy the whole kit. I see Centrotec as one of the main reasons for using the festool drills over the other brands. It's just so much faster to change bits that it really can eliminate the need for having two drills on hand when for example drilling pilot holes og countersinking.

Peter has done a good video about Centrotec, which explains how it works and why it is more stable than a legacy hex system.

As for legacy bit compatibility, some of the drills (eg CXS) only come with the magnetic bit holder, which allows them to use legacy bits but it is nowhere as precise as the centrotec and no good for hex drill bits as the magnet is obviously not strong enough to extract the bits from the wood.  A locking holder, like the BHS-65 would be a much better addition.

Axminster, and probably others, do 'universal' bits which fit most hex holders - I have these and they work with the centrotec very well: http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-trade-bitz-11-piece-long-series-bit-set-506282.  That set includes a locking legacy bit holder.

It is actually possible to make older hex bits fit a centrotec chuck - the high points of the hex bit corners need filing down a smidge.  You can also file a slot to get them to lock into place.

Dear Festool USA, please bring back the Centrotec hand driver that used the drill chuck.

You can get it from Amazon UK for about 35 USD shipped.

Cheers. Bryan.

this is something youll miss once its gone. messing with drill bits and chucking them in drives me crazy at times. the jacobs is bulky and adds weight as well. the t18 and cxs are the most tools used for me [smile]
