Whipped this up for my brother who has an original MCM home (with an updated kitchen). He'll be hosting Thanksgiving this year and we won't be able to make it. So, I'll be sending this for him to use in lieu (along with some primo charcuterie to deck it out).

I kept it close to period, but threw my own design twist in on it. (He is a car/track enthusiast so I wanted to incorporate a subtle play on a rally stripe to make it personal). Primary is Walnut, accented with West Coast Maple, and East Indian Rosewood. Festool Tools used, TS55, CXS (for dowels), and ETS EC 125/3. Others...Jet Jointer, DeWalt Planer, and my Phenolic routing table for the chamfers.

With a wet coat of Osmo Top Oil (clear) on it since it will be used for oily food serving, gives you a better representation of the chatoyance of the maple. It reduced to a beautiful satin sheen after drying and buffing.

Osmo top oil is not recommended for cutting boards according to their website, it has not been submitted for FDA approval (page 2 of the SDS).  Since it's for your brother, it may not matter.......... ;D

Hmm...I don't see this in the SDS. Are you sure you are looking at the right one? Osmo lists its application use for kitchen work surfaces (butcher block countertops). It's based on vegetable oils and waxes; and they show food product in contact with work surfaces on the container.

Not being overly defensive, but this also is not a cutting board - it's probably my fault by showing a knife in the picture. It's way too thin to handle the abuse of cutting.

    The info on food grade finish is on osmona.com website, they actually call it a product quick sheet, and is the very last question in the section headed FAQ'S/IMPORTANT FACTS on page 2. "Is Top oil a food grade finish"? is the question.  It's not very easy to find, for sure.  You're absolutely right about them showing it's use on countertops and tabletops, I don't doubt it probably is safe to use on your tray just wanted to make sure you didn't need a lawyer in the future concerning a death by serving tray situation! [scared] 
    Beautiful wood selection for the tray by the way, I like the rally stripe!

which as you can see also states that when dry it should be safe.  i think the manufacturer is just covering itself by not designating it 'food safe' specifically--i would't be surprised if it submitted the stuff already to the fda and is waiting for results.  we probably ingest worse stuff eating a hot dog, it you think about it.  i, for one, would have no qualms about using something like that.  i think it's a terrific tray and your brother will treasure it.  love the sharp angles and the choice of woods.

I can't recall the last time you've had a truly useful or even a genuinely funny comment on here, but i do recall that this is not the first time you've had a less than charitable entry to someone who just started posting on the FOG and has been eager to start sharing their projects with the group--you, sir are no WOW!

That is a very nice choice of woods for a great gift project.

I checked the document suggested by teocaf.  I think they are suggesting hat the finish used is probably safe.  At the top of the page, the latest revision was date 3/10/10.  Is it possible the product has been approved since that time?
