Back in '75 I bought this 2 bdrm house
BECAUSE it had a four car detached
garage.  Ran 220V electrical, water, gas
and sewer line out to the garage and
converted half into a jewelry shop, with
insulated walls and ceiling and carpeted
floor.  Did a lot of lost wax casting there
for years, then it became a stain glass
shop before finally evolving into the Clean
Room of the wood shop.

Machines have been added since I did this
"tour" but it'll give you an idea of what's
where.  After visiting other folks' sites
I wanted to see the tools and machines
in their context - so that's what I did for
my shop.

Charlie,

Great detail. Do you ever sleep?  :o What program did you use for the shop layout and the detailed icons?

All line drawing illustrations were done in
in and old (last version was 1993) Mac
app called SuperPaint from Aldus - bought
out by Adobe and shelved because it was
in competition with Illustrator - and 1/3rd
the price AND was a lot easier to learn to
use.  Displays dimensions in either inches
or mm so doing scaled drawings is pretty
easy.  The drafting class I took in 9th grade
helped too.

Too bad for me. I need to layout my shop better and haven't been able to find a software that has the tool icons with dim's.  :(

If you'd consider using Sketchup this guy has some nice 3D-models of tools:http://www.yda-online.com/shopmodels.htm
I you wouldn't consider that, the tools in the grid might be helpful anyway. :-)

Charlie: Great shop, would love to have one like that.

Thanks Cowsine. That was what I was looking for. Thanks also to Ned who also suggested Sketchup. Now I need to find some good tutorials.

Charlie, that's a really great website you've put together there; all kinds of goodies.  I'm looking forward to exploring it.  Thanks.

Les: There are lots of good video tutorials at:http://sketchup.google.com/gsu5vtvideos.html

This one, explaining common mistakes, is a must and worth revisiting, quite useful even for experienced SU users ( #5 in the link above )-http://sketchup.google.com/gsu5vtviewer.html#id=4

Watching a few of the videos and playing around with SU while watching a few more videos as needed should get you on the right track fast. The go-2-school-guys site is really good too, especially, I find,to learn a good workflow and habits.

Charlie: I got lazy and would have missed the rest of your site if it wasn't for Brent b above. Good thing I didn't, now I know where to spend a few hours. :)

Those are very good tutorials.  The only problem that I've found with them is the version number on the web page - "Version 5".  I think most people miss them believing that they are no longer valid for the current (V6.0) version.

There are some very good Sketchup tutorials and drawings here:http://www.garymkatz.com/charts_drawings.html.  What is unique about Gary's site is that it is oriented to finish carpentry and woodworking.  For example, one Sketchup tutorial takes you through the process of designing a bookcase as a woodworker would design it so that he could build it.

Regards,

Dan.

You are quite right, it sure isn't obvious that the SU5 tutorials still are valid for SU6. Since it's probably still the most thorough explanation of SU it's really sad if people don't use them (especially #5 :) ). So let's be explicit! :-)
The difference between SU5 and SU6 is roughly adding: "google" in a lot of places, Photo Match, improved text tool and Styles, neither really affects the basic functionality at all! Use the SU5 tutorials!  There. :)

I'd better take a look at Gary Katz's SU-stuff, I really liked those trim videos of his that I've seen.

For woodworking uses of SU I can also recommend FWW's SU-blog at:http://blogs.taunton.com/n/blogs/blog.aspx?webtag=fw-designforum
The new "SketchUp for Dummies" has a lot of free (YouTube) videos and some other content at:http://www.aidanchopra.com

Well, now we've turned Charlie's shop presentation in to a SU-thread... Sorry Charlie.
Perhaps a moderator could do some forking if they find it appropriate?

...and above all, good SketchUping to all of you!   ;)
