Recently finished this chest of drawers -

Solid cherry with maple drawer interior.  Used plenty of Festools from the Domino to Kapex, Rotex, ETS350, OF1010 Router, and Drills.  Drawer dovetails were cut with an Akeda jig.

Overall dimensions are about 50" wide by 20" deep by 35" high.

Also did a mirror to match, though I don't have photos of it.

Finish was a General Finishes Nordic Oil and Wax finish with a Wax buff coat.  400 grit wet sanding between coats.  Rotex with buffing pad to buff the wax coat.

Feedback welcome -

Very nice, I like to overall appearance. The piece has a really nice look to it. Nice job on the chamfered edge on the top, very clean.

Great piece Neil!  I really love the wood and applaud the use of maple for the drawers.  I'm always tempted to economize and use cheaper wood for drawers.

Only suggestion I have is the grain matching.  You did a great job on the drawer faces, but the top and the side panel are not as quietly elegant.  I think the overall piece would work better if you could have keep to straight, quiet grain throughout when you were edge jointing to make wider pieces.

Beautiful piece, though - and great craftsmanship!

Thanks for the comments and compliments to you all -

Jesse - agree with you on the grain matching.  The drawer faces came out very consistently as did the other end panel.

Would be open to ideas on how to make sure cherry grain and color matches when leaving the lumber yard.  The top pieces were all out of one piece of cherry - as were the two end panels.  As they darken, I think they will blend a bit more.

I've just finished a quarter sawn red oak table and the grain on it was very consistent - what you get with QS.

I did economize on the interior frame - it's made from poplar - I have something north of $600 in wood, finish, and drawer pulls in that piece.

Appreciate the feedback -

Finally took some photos of the dresser after I got it out of the workshop and in place, along with a mirror that I made to match.

Overall I'm pleased with the finished project.  Apologies for the quality.  I had to downsample them to get them to load.

Nice clean design and very well  executed
The assembly with the mirror completes it
Great craftmanship

Neil,

Great job.  Love everything about your chest of drawers.  I really like working with cherry but have had a real tough time with the grain matching.  The more natural the finish, the more grain variances seem to show.  As you mentioned, it should darken with age.

I have pondered the grain issue and think that the only way to get it right might be to get some planks and resaw them or have them resawn.

Keep up the good work.

Neill

P. S. How come you spell your name so funny?  [poke]

Thanks Neill

If I spelled my name like yours, there would be massive confusion here.  So I'll do my part ;)

I'm about to build an entertainment center out of QS Red Oak so we'll see how that grain matching goes.

Appreciated the compliments...
