I know there are issues on all forums offering "free" listings but I have not had a problem till today. An item was listed, I said I wanted it, was given a PayPal account to make payment, while signed onto PayPal & making payment I received a mail received pop-up message that came from the seller, and it said item has been sold. I was literally a three key strokes away from making payment. I thought the message was that I was the buyer but to double check I wrote the seller and sure enough someone else got the item. Really - send more than one person your PayPal account for payment??? Moderators can check my PM's it was 5 minutes between getting the PayPal address and when the item was sold under me.

Any way we can rate sellers?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

We don't have a way of offering a rating system. However, I suspect that if someone ever had a problem, they would post it on the forum for all to see. Sorry for your "close call".

Also, private messages are, well, private. We can't see them.

Thanks for the quick reply. Almost all FOGers are more than fair here - just had to vent a bit. I'm over it now ;D

Shane As far as I was aware it was against forum rules to post with regard problems with purchases made though the classified section of the site.

is there anything wrong with naming the seller? i don't see the harm in telling people what happened however minor and who the transaction was with as long its not just slander.

im in 2 minds over this
you dont want a vigianty type situation  where anyone can harm someones reputation and hinder the sale .
but you dont want sitations like this where obviously there was multiple people bidding on an item. a sale was agreed and someone out bid the agreed price. there is a name for that and you see it a lot on ebay

not sure how to fix the problem
maybe a few rules on this type of thing and a wrap on the wrist for breaking them

This is completely unethical in my opinion and I would be extremely upset if this happened to me.  I don't even know if an explanation from the seller would satisfy me.  I think I would mention the sellers name not in a rude or disparaging way, but so others know who they are dealing with.

A quick update...

I've consulted with the moderators, who act as representatives for the members of the forum. And, let me say that I very much value their opinions and insight into matters like this one.

We have determined that it would be in the best interest of the forum to refrain from providing a platform for classifieds disputes. Classifieds transactions are private and should be handled in that manner from start to finish. Disputes will need to be resolved between the members. Should a dispute be posted on the forum in the future, it will be removed without warning. The forum guidelines have been updated accordingly.

This does not apply to discussions about transactions with dealers, other retailers and manufacturers.

Let me say that I personally don't want to see any of our members in a situation where they have a transaction gone bad. But, that is a genuine risk of buying used online. Practical steps should be taken to make purchases wisely and protect yourself.

I'm sure there will be varying opinions on the topic. But, please respect our decision on the topic.

Thank you,
Shane
