Classified Ads

Matthew, your rules seem very reasonable to me.  I've purchased a few items through a classified listing with great success and think it's a valuable addition to the forum; but you should NOT be losing any sleep over such thing, or even cat nap for that matter.

Thanks Matthew for having the classified ads.  They have been a big help to me!!

We all need to view the ads as strictly between the buyer and seller and not take up Matthew's time complaining about prices or terms!

I say keep them as well. It's a nice option to find Festools at a little discount. The claasified section are doe not get that many posts anyway, so hopefully we can get this worked out for the best of the board.

Jesse nails it right on the head.

Thanks for all your work Matthew.

Agreed.

Matthew-
You do a great job with this list.  And it is your list.  Make any rules you think are necessary, you have always demonstrated excellent, sound judgment.

I think the classified are a good thing to have and there needs to be rules - yours are as good as any and way better than most.

Hi,

The classified rules say that a link to Ebay can be put in the ad, but that you can't run an auction directly on the forum. O.K. But then the rules go on to say- If you post a link to Ebay you also must put a full listing on the forum.  So how is this not running an auction on the forum? This seems contradictory to me.  Also it would not be right to sell something on the forum after people may have aleady placed bids on Ebay.  So how is this supposed to work?

OK I give up.  What's the problem with the rules?  If you want to sell a tool on EBay, give a complete description of it here and link to the auction website.  If anyone from the forum is interested, they can either make you an offer (if you accept you can cancel the ebay auction as long as the reserve hasnt been met, or bid on it on ebay.

Seems reasonable and simple to me.  What am I missing?

True, but I suggest that you offer an item here first, and then go to eBay only if it doesn't move, OR just put it on eBay, put a note here pointing to the eBay auction, and run the sale through eBay.  Best not to attempt to sell an item in two places at the same time.

If you list an item on eBay, and then accept an out-of-eBay offer, the seller is out the insertion fees, and is potentially open to an accusation by eBay that the seller's trying to weasel out of eBay's commission (Final Value Fee).

Here's my concern about auctions: I don't want the board to simply be a tool for drawing attention to eBay listings.  On occasion, we have had members who have posted nothing in the forum except classifieds and references to eBay.  As we debated the development of a classified section, several members expressed concern about this very thing.  Seth, I know you are not guilty of this!  I know you have contributed valuable posts to the forum.  But the rules need to be general, for everyone.

Members of this community who wish to sell tools should be willing to make a kind of "exclusive offer" to the community.  I don't want people to just use this community.  My suggestion is that members post classifieds here before posting an eBay auction.  Let the ad run here for a while, and if it doesn't work, then post it on eBay.  That would take care of the whole issue.

I hope this makes sense.

But I do see that the rules may be a bit confusing.  I'll rework them.

Everyone,
Based on this discussion, I read over the rules again. I realized the whole auction thing is just causing confusion (and more headaches for me).

I have edited the rules: Classifieds in the Festool Owners Group must be wholly independent from eBay auctions.  If you want to sell items on eBay, do that.  If you want to sell items here on the forum, do that.  But don't mix the two.

To be honest, I think sellers are much better off just offering the item to the forum.  It's a friendlier community, and in the end it's really a lot easier to sell things this way.  If I have a tool to sell, you can be sure I will offer it here before I consider eBay!

Matthew

Hi,

Yes, simply disallowing the Ebay linking is the the best idea. I had previously offered an item here first, and then after a while placed it on Ebay. When I was ready to sell my current items I saw that I could link it to Ebay. So I set the listing up and started the auction. Then when I was getting ready to place it on the classified also I discovered the conflicts. So I would have offered it here first , exclusively. But since the auctions is already running and has a number of watchers , and I have already answered several potential buyer questions- I am going to let it play out on Ebay.  I think it will sell, if not I will place it here before re-running the auction.

Everyone,
I've received a flood of e-mails and PMs in the last two days regarding classified ads.  Please, if you have questions regarding classified ads, post them here.  That way, everyone can see your question, we can have an open discussion.  And, of course, I won't have to answer the same question several times!
Thanks,
Matthew
