Sorry to raise this topic again, but I just searched this forum and didn't find an answer.  Are we allowed to post an ad to sell a used Festool tool?  I'll be selling one soon and I'd like to be able to offer it to the folks here before I go to the other forums, ebay, craigslist, etc.

Please, no private emails to inquire what I'm selling.

Regards,

John

I also would like to see a section where people can post FS and WTB's.

For the record, I ain't selling anything but I'd sure like to acquire some  ;D

I think that this would be an excellent addition to this forum. In many cases I'll bet that the tool is being sold to fund the purchase of another new Festool machine. I think that the seller, the buyer, and Festool would come out ahead.

Yeah, the OF1010 that I just bought was exactly as you described. The seller wanted to upgrade to the OF1400. I was more than happy to buy it, he was more than happy to sell it. Worked out well for both of us.

John,
Sorry I didn't respond to your earlier discussion of this.  From the response here, it looks like people support the idea of classified ads.  I've created a board for classifieds.  It appears in the "Off-Topic" area.  I'd like to provide this option to people, but I don't want it to be in the main discussion area.

As always, opinions are welcome.

Let's see how it goes.

Matthew

Matthew, thanks for responding so quickly. I cut and pasted the following classified guidelines from another forum that I frequent. It might help everyone to have some "boundaries" in place to eliminate misunderstandings and lower your stress level.  ;) They have this posted in a sticky at the top of their classified page.

Listing Guidelines:

- No commercial postings allowed, unless you specifically clear it with me first

- No illegal items allowed (items that are counterfeit, or are illegal copies).

- Listing and placing links to items on eBay *is* allowed, providing that you specifically list a description of the item, and then give a link. No blind links.

- You may *bump* your ad, but no more than once every three (3) days. Ads that have been bumped more than five (5) times may be deleted.

- You may not create more than FOUR different posts at any one time, or have more than four posts bumped onto the first page of the classifieds at any one time. The reason for this is to allow space for everyone to sell, buy, and trade.

- If you want to conduct an auction for your parts, please use Ebay. An asking price is not required, but auctions are not allowed.

- The more text and photos you add, the more likely you are to sell. Add as many photos and as much text description as you need to adequately describe the parts.

- Try to avoid using capital letters and explanation marks in the listing titles - these only serve to irritate people and thus they may skip over your listing.

- Make sure you have enabled "Email Notification" and "Private Message Notification," and have subscribed to your post so that you know when someone has posted a comment, question, or sent an email or PM regarding your ad.

- Indicate your geographic location, either in the post itself or by filling out the "location" field of your profile.

- PayPal (www.paypal.com) is a very useful form of payment that is very popular with eBay auctions. People who accept PayPal typically get paid faster and have increased interest in their listings.

- Be sure to list your email address and/or contact phone number in the listing. Also indicate where the part is located and how shipping will be arranged if it can't be shipped in a box.

- When the item is sold, simply modify your post (using the edit button), to indicate that the item has indeed been sold. Posters are not allowed to delete threads - only edit them. Don't remove the original information, as that will render it useless for people to reseach historical price info.

Buyer's Guidelines:

- It is appropriate to respond to an ad by either emailing or sending the seller a Personal Message (PM) through the board. Try to avoid replying directly to the post, except when you have specific questions that may help others looking at the ad. More often than not, PMs and emails reach the seller quicker than do responses to the post.

- Be polite, and don't trash someone else's listing. It's not polite to point out that the person is selling this part when there is one cheaper on eBay. However, if there are visible errors in the listing, it is then appropriate to follow up with comments.

- Check out the seller before sending your $$$. Get full information, including multiple phone numbers and addresses. Do a search on Pelican to see if this person has a lengthy posting history and/or has sold items here before. Bad news travels fast, so double-check the archives, particularly on purchases that are high dollar.

- Use the search engine, but make sure that you check the date on the ad if you reply. If an ad is from 2001 and you reply to it, it will appear like the ad is recent, and the part will probably have long since been sold.

- Use the search engine to compare pricing and availability of an item. None of the previous ads are deleted, so you have access to a vast group of listings that you can use to track pricing trends, and availability.

- Most importanly, COMMUNICATE with each other. Ask the seller how long the item will take to ship, whether he will email you the tracking number, etc. All of this should be settled before money changes hands. Most buying and selling conflics arise because of poor communication. Get each other's phone numbers and addresses!

Policy on Disputes:

Disputes will inevitably arise, but bringing them to the attention of the forum should be used only as last resort. You should exhaust all other options -- phone calls, emails, etc. -- and have a little patience in allowing legitimate packing and shipping delays before posting a complaint. Complaints must be fact-based, non-hysterical, and not personally insulting or inflammatory. They serve the purpose of warning others about someone's poor behavior, and hopefully convincing that person to make the situation right.

Jim,
Thanks for posting the guidelines for classifieds that are used in another forum.  They look perfectly reasonable to me.

I'll leave this open for public comment for a little bit.  Then, if everyone agrees with the guidelines, I'll post them as a "sticky" in the "Classified Ads" section.

I'd like to give credit to the forum where these guidelines came from.  I'd also like to inform them that we are using their guidelines.  Can you tell me where they are from?

Thanks,
Matthew

Jim,
I've sent an e-mail to the Porsche forum letting them know I am using their classified guidelines.  In the meantime, I'll post the guidelines, along with a "courtesy of" note to that forum.  You can find the guidelines posted as a sticky in the "Classified Ads" section.

PS: I'm still waiting to see if they will send me a 911 so I can determine how well it works with my Festool equipment.  But if I don't get a 911, I'll settle for a Carrera.

Matthew

Matthew, many thanks for creating the classifieds section, not to mention all the other work you do to keep this web site running.

Regards,

John

Matthew,
I hate to be nit-picky, but as the owner of an old 911, I thought I should point out that Carrera is merely a sub-category of 911.  It started with the 1973 as the race-oriented option package.  Very, very rare and expensive.  In 1984 all 911s (except Turbos) were badged "Carrera".  That convention continues to this day.  Each vintage has its own number designating the model changes.  My 1983 (non-Carrera) is a 911SC.  Since 1989 the numbers have been 964, 993, 996 and the current edition is a 997.  These numbers are used only by Porsche people as the cars all say "911" on them (unless they have the word Carrera).

Btw, Pelican Parts is a great source of parts and I recommend them highly.  I've ordered a lot of things from them through the years.

I wonder if Festool might consider bringing back its used or demo tool program through this classifieds area.  I still haven't heard the whole story on why they stopped this practice, but I think it was an excellent opportunity for less affluent customers to enjoy Festool quality.

You hit it on the head for me Brandon. Not all of us work with these great tools for a living, so the better the price the more I can afford to buy.

Gary

Brandon,
Thanks for differentiating the various 911s for me.  Unfortunately, I am unlikely to have an opportunity to learn the differences first hand!!

I don't know the whole story here, but perhaps it's worth inquiring about.  I'd be happy to set up a special area for the demo tools here.

Let's see,
Matthew

Everyone,
I just heard back from Festool regarding demo tools.  The answer is, they do not have a lot of these tools,
and they don't sell them any more.  Demo tools are now used in schools.
Matthew

Everyone,
I've moved John's discussion into the Classified Ads section, where it belongs.  We can use this discussion as a place for members to voice their opinions about ads in general.

There has been some grumbling about the new rules for classified ads.  Then again, there was some grumbling about the lack of strict rules.  Then again, there was grumbling about the very existence of a classified ads section!

Please try to see it from an administrative point of view:
  • I have to monitor the ads
  • I have to field members' messages and complaints
  • Even though I'm not directly responsible, I have to deal with it if anyone sells something suspect
  • I've received complaints recently from members who dislike anonymous classifieds

Some members have complained about people who do not post anything in the forum except classified ads.

The final straw was last week, when I received complaints from two members who bought items from the classified section and were unhappy with the shipping arrangements.  They wrote to me, asking me to do something about it.

I'm sorry if the new rules are a bother, but I'm trying to balance the this free service with members' legitimate concerns.  Keeping the classified section up has been quite a bit of work for me, for doubtful benefit.

Keep in mind that about half of all Festool Owners Group members are against the very idea of selling tools in the forum.  But I'm always interested in providing the best forum for members.  The solution, I believe, is to have a classified section but require that sellers be up front about their real identities.  It seems like very little to ask.

As always, I'm interested in hearing what members have to say.

Matthew

My vote is to keep the classifieds. Because you do a lot of work to provide this place for us, I'll follow any rules you set. You won't hear me griping. Caveat Emptor.
