Hi guys,

Could somebody tell me what the right stuff of way is to clean my festeel cs50 blades? The are a bit... browny... the same is for my router cutters...

I've tried serval things but no result. Only with amoniak I had some result but barely..

Is there something that i can buy in the store for this? ( in Europe  ;) )

I use household ammonia, and soak the blades in a round plastic "dish" that I made by cutting off the upper part of a 5-gallon bucket, leaving the botton with sides about 30mm high.

Soaking for only about 5 minutes will remove most of the gum and resin, and I use a Scotchbrite pad to remove the rest. Afterwards, I coat the blade with a spray-on lubricant made especially for saw blades.

A brush with brass bristles (soft) is a big help, too.  Soaking for a long time (e.g. overnight) in some solvents can damage carbide.

My sharpener says that about half of the blades hobbyists bring in just need cleaning, not sharpening.

Hmm, ammonia, no, I wouldn't use that. Ammonia is used mostly as a solution in water, and you don't want to soak your blades in water. Especially not Festool blades, they rust like crazy. Pure ammonia, well, that's another story, but dang, is that stuff nasty.

Use WD40. It has some strong solvents in it that dissolve greasy easily. Perfect stuff to clean metals.

I use the CMT 2050 cleaner plus a brass brush and or scotch brite pad.  And NO, the brass bristles can't harm the carbide teeth.

Whenever I notice a degradation in the saw cut I'll clean the blade and so far it has brought it back to good performance.

+1 on the CMT 2050.  I use the lid of a 5 gallon mud bucket laid flat on the workbench, put the blade in it and spray it down with the CMT 2050.  I let it sit for five minutes or so, then turn it over and spray the other side.  I don't need to use much spray, and it cleans up very easily.  I've used both a brass brush as well as a fingernail brush to scrub the blades.

I just bought oven cleaner, Mr Musle. I'll see if that works.
If that doens't work I'll order the CMT stuf.

I did some research for Simple green and read some user warnings  for use on saw blades..."don;t do it" was the message.
before that I called Festool Holland... perhaps they had something for this ....

Festool: Sorry? you want to clean your blades and router bits? Sorry, but in my 20 years experience I never heard something like that... I just ask my collegea, I technicien who work for Leitz and he also never heard anybody about cleaning blades and bits....

so for for their experience... ::)

I just let the blade soak in water and dawn(dish soap)for about 5-10 min
Remove any dirt/gum using a soft brush, and DRY them really good.

I do the same but spray with WD40 after drying with a towel to displace water.  Been doing it for years, no rust on any of my blades.  Usually clean a dozen times then send in to be sharpened.

I use Arm  & Hammer Super Suds mixed in hot water so it dissolves. I use a Spackle bucket lid to soak a 10" blade. Let sit for 5 minutes or so, lift out of lid and scrub teeth with a tooth brush and drop back in for the stubborn stuff. Brush again and dry thoroughly. You are good to go. MARK

I use CMT Blade and Bit cleaner too. It works really well and doesn't require any additional product to prevent corrosion.

Being sure nothing is shed by bits, blades or anything else onto wood which will interfere with staining later, I have only used specially made products which have been tested and proven to not get in the way of stains.

Currently my shop uses CMT bit cleaner and a product from Felder for cleaning saw blades. Both are effective at removing glue and sap gunk, while doing as little harm to keen edges as possible.

cmt for me too. when that bottle is gon  i will try the trend version , iv heard good things

i cleaned my blade today with the stove cleaner, foam version. Worked great! My blade looks as new. Tomorrow a'll check it with some oak. If I do that now I probably have a visit from the neigbour or the police ( and i don;'t want a kick in the balls from the last one  [cool])

The reaction of Festool Netherlands annoyed me quite a bit. This was a salesman, but even then, the ignorance and arrogant reaction makes you really wonder if they Festool is not just simply stick a label on a device.

" sir, I my 20 years of experience..."  yeah richt, 20 years experience in what? scratching your butt?

Suckers!

sorry admin  [mad]
