Cleaning up wood for finishing

Hi,
I'm working on finishing the basement in my 8-10 year old house.  The previous owners were nice enough to get the unfinished interior wood around the windows dirty (the wood looks sorta like when you smudge something with dirty fingers).  Then some dust and such has accumulated while hanging drywall and such.

I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions on how I should go about cleaning the wood back up before finishing?  I can sand some parts, but I don't think I'll ever get into all the nooks and crannies with sandpaper.

If it helps, I'm almost positive the windows are made of pine or something similar as it's a pretty light grain pattern.  I'm planning on having to condition the wood before staining to avoid blotches.

Thanks!
