CMT Cutting Bits for the Domino

Ive been impressed with how well the Festool Domino bits have held up for us.  We don't use it nearly as much as the cabinet makers here on the FOG, but it has cut a lot of mortises and the bits are still decent.

resurfacing this thread.

My CMT 6mm domino bit just snapped off at the tip; rendering the bit useless and giving me unexpected and unwanted downtime.

I had barely used it.

I guess when they work they work judging by other's experiences...perhaps I had a bad bit or hit some kind of random crystalline structure in the wood---I don't see anything different in the wood and had cut other mortises FINE in the same plank...

I was boring through hard oak when it snapped so take it for what its worth.

I've cut hundreds of domino holes and haven't had a snap with the Festool bits...knock on wood...ouch...knock on soft wood...and maybe only bore into softer woods with that CMT bit...

Competition is great an a useful exercise of the free enterprise system.  Unless there are copyright issues, long term quality will determine which tools I will buy.  Wondering if Seneca Woodworking is buying CMT cutting bit or manufacturing their own?

This thread just keeps on giving.

Just rammed my 5mm bit into a pocket screw I forgot I had used to brace a cupboard together and was thinking about getting one of the CMT solid carbide bits - I know it doesn't make them unbreakable, but bear with me.

Turns out I can buy one of them from Amazon.com and have it shipped to the UK for less than I can buy a genuine one locally - and when I say locally, my local outfit are as cheap as you can get.

Are they any good these CMT bits before I try one?

If you are getting it to here for under £20, it's a bargain. Otherwise you can get a 5mm here for less. Pm me if you need more info.

I was trying to find one in the UK, do you sell them?

Ad I saw this post, I was using my 500 the other day and my domino's were not doing in fully, it took me a minute to realize the tip of the cutter had broken off(my fault, I was using it inside a finished cabinet and I think I hit a screw)
I was not aware that CMT made the cutters, thanks, I'm going to give it a shot

Don't ever recall seeing this thread over the years and I've owned my Domino since '09.  Nice to know there is an alternative out there.

Like somebody said, the thread that just keeps on giving.  Good one!
