CMT Cutting Bits for the Domino

Just out of interest, how many people have actually worn a bit out? (not damaged one with a nail etc)

I have not broke a bit but I did about 300 or so holes in Ipe spindles.  She's not as sharp as she once wuz, thats for sure.

Bill,

What are you using to grip those brad point bits?   Do you have a Festool 10mm collet?

Dave R.

Hi Dave, I bought the 8mm shanked bits to use with my OF 1010. I'm building a small set of bathroom cabs using sys32 and the holes look like they were done with a line boring machine.

Bill,

Who is selling 1/4 inch cutting diameter brad point bits with an 8mm shank?  The Whiteside 1/4 inch cutting diameter bits have 10 mm shanks.

Hello All,

Just to update.  I received all the CMT Bits on Tuesday but due to the inclement weather here in NJ, I've been clearing snow and ice for the past few days.  I'm getting too old for this s**t.

Today I hope to get some time in on the domino and CMT bits.  I plan to start a new Thread/Post on this topic.
That is, once I figure out how to post pictures.  Thank you Matthew.

Can those bits be used with anything else?  If not, it would seem there could be a patent issue going on. I'm surprised that Festool allowed CMT to copy their design.

As a US patent attorney, I don't how we can determine if those CMT bits are an infringing "copy" without further detailed information.[...]
Dave R.

I have been told that bearing manufacturers can produce parts for motor vehicles that can vary in a non-critical dimension and therefore not fall foul to "copying" of OEM parts.

So if CMT made their cutters a shade larger, that would make them different from Festools. It is still possible they have a licensing deal with festool. They do use the registered trademarks for Domino and Festool in the CMT catalog.

Any word on how these CMT bits compare to the Festool bits?   I'm thinking of buying the CMT bits, but wanted to first check with folks on this board.

I doubt that the CMT Domino Cutters are over-sized. They state that they are even mm sized.

I'd take them out and measure them but their packaging is sealed and I don't want to make them unsaleable.

Trying to resurrect this thread from the dead.  I'm getting ready to buy some CMT bits for my Domino, but wanted to hear if it was worth it.

I'm planning to try some, probably on Wednesday. I'll post my results. They should be just fine but since I have never actually tried them, I can't yet say definitively.

A few months ago, I discovered the hard way that the Domino won't cut through a nail.  I jumped on Amazon, saw a 5mm cutter, and ordered it.  After a couple weeks of using it, I realized it was a CMT bit, not a Festool.  So I guess they're ok  [smile]

How were your results using the CMT bits?  I am dying to hear.

I've loaned my Domino to a customer who's making some assemblies of planks. I was planning to participate in the process, as he's new to the Domino. I got really busy and had to give him some tutelage to get him started and leave it in his hands.

I left him with a brand new 5mm CMT bit and a lightly used Festool 5mm bit. I really don't expect there to be a distinguishable difference, unless you poke a lot of holes in a lot of abrasive wood. Certain species have crystallized minerals suspended in their structure. Anyway, he has both the Festool and CMT versions of the same bit. I'll check in during the coming week and see how he/they performed.

I suspect that the project went well and both bits performed swimmingly.

I'm going to resurrect this thread after talking to a customer today and realizing that I was supposed to report back on these bits.

I can't tell the difference and neither can my customers. I have some in stock.

HA, a little too late for me.  I just purchased the Domino Systainer package with all the bits last month.  Unfortunately, now I have duplicates of the 4mm and 5mm.  Anyone want to buy brand new 4mm and 5mm bits at a decent discount?  [big grin]

I seriously doubt that you'll be disappointed in your choice.

If you do a lot of joinery in narrow materials, you'll eventually use both repeat bits, I suspect. It will take a lot of mortises to wear out a Festool bit but it can be done...

Tom

I now have a customer that has made hundreds of mortises with a 6mm CMT bit in a phenolic resin impregnated and coated plywood. The bit still appears to be sharp.

Is there a price difference?  I really need a 5mm

Thanks,
Jon
