CMT Domino cutters

Ed:
I bought two for a 700 a few months ago, but unfortunately haven't tried them yet. I certainly can't tell the difference between the CMT and the Festool bit from looking at them, except for the markings on the bits themselves.  There was a previous thread on here a year or so ago with a little more info from users who provided info that pointed me in the CMT direction.

I've used them in various sizes extensively. After nearly 500 domino cuts, I find that they cut just as cleanly as the Festool ones. No regrets whatsoever in my purchases, and I've saved considerably buying the CMT cutters vs the original ones.

I agree on the cmt domino bits, I only buy the Festool bits if I am in a bind and need a replacement ASAP.

They also do a collet extension for routers that is a very attractive price, their bits for the Mafell Duo Doweler are worth looking at if you have the machine. If anyone wants a price in the UK let me know.

That is good to know as I just got a 700 and need a few more bits. I did buy the Seneca adaptor and it works great. Best of both worlds.

Maxprod.com is starting to stock the CMT cutters.  You can find them here:  www.maxprod.com/prodcat/FES-H62.asp  Please be patient as we get our inventory built up.  They keep selling ot as fast as they come in.

Bump.....

[member=42176]Drich[/member] hows that seneca adapter working out - any issues? Any problem with the mechanics the 700, there have been some recent postings that there may be an issue with the adapter and the gearbox.

Thanks

It worked out fine for me. I did end up selling it and going with the 500 as it was just to big for the 3/4 inch work I was mostly doing.

Since this thread got bumped I would just note some dissatisfaction I have with the D10 CMT cutter for the Domino XL.  It cuts the mortises a hair larger than the Festool D10 cutter on my DF500.  Not enough to make it useless, but definitely noticeable.

I did not know about these, but the reviews arent looking great on them so far...

I bought a very lightly used Domino 700 last week and bought 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 14mm CMT cutters from Amazon and a Seneca adapter from Seneca (Amazon was out of the adapter).  On the second cut today, the 14mm cutter broke.  Fortunately Amazon is great on returns, they are sending the replacement and all I have to do is take the broken one to a UPS store for them to return it.  But I was very unpleasantly surprised it broke.  I didn't plunge it quickly.  I was cutting hard maple but that should not break carbide.  I will update after the new cutter arrives and I give it a try.  I am making a crib and need to make a lot of 14mm mortises so I will get a chance to exercise the replacement.  If the replacement breaks I guess I will have to bite the bullet and buy a Festool.

I've never had a problem with a CMT blade or router bit.  Hopefully this was just one bad cutter and not typical.  I

My replacement 14mm CMT cutter arrived from Amazon yesterday and I got a chance to use it a few minutes ago.  I am happy to report it works great!  I used it to successfully cut slot mortises in hard maple.  6 of the mortises are over 5 inches long and two are over 3 inches long.  All are over 1.5 inches deep.  No issues.  Cutter works fine.

Seems like the bottom line is CMT occasionally makes a bad one but their cutters work - for a lot lower price.  I will probably test my other cutters this weekend to make sure none of them are "bad ones".

Wow, over a year later its not looking like the reviews are that great. I wonder what theyre doing wrong. CMT should know how to make a solid product.

I purchased 5, 6, 8, 10, and 14mm CMT cutters from Amazon after buying a Domino XL.  The 14mm broke on the second cut, as I posted earlier.  The replacement cut a series of 6 inch long 40mm deep mortises in hard maple, however, and is still going strong.  Last night I make a test block out of a scrap of oak newel post using all my cutters in both standard and the wider width.  I am happy to report all the cutters worked fine.  I plunged the XL cutters to 40mm and the little ones to 25mm.

So I think my experience with the first 14mm cutter was just a bad bit, something that happens, especially with really hard metal.  Hard has a strong tendency to mean brittle so it only takes a small unnoticed crack and the tip breaks off.

I got the 8mm for my 700 from CMT, cant tell the difference between it and the Festool bits

I know this thread is a bit old but couple weekends I was cutting quite a few 6mm mortises (CMT bit, XL, and Seneca adapter) and found the tenons were pretty loose. The tenons were pretty much right at 6.0mm but the slots were about 6.15mm. I made sure the faces of all the components being tightened were nice and clean.

I've always remembered the tenons being pretty tight. I didn't have time to experiment so I put the tenons in a vacuum container with some water that I can attach to my FoodSaver vac. This worked too well so then needed to microwave them a bit.

Do you think I have a bit size issue or is it the tenons and humidity issue?

Only way to know for sure is to get a Festool 6mm and preform the same operation.

You could just measure the cutter.  Ideally I'd use a mike.  But if I couldn't find mine, I would use a dial caliper (or digital caliper).  I've used my 6mm CMT cutter and it worked fine but I used home made dominos so I can't really comment on the size of the mortises.

I used the CMT Domino cutters. As far I am concerned, they are as good as the stock cutters. I make my own tenons though.
