coating iron for outdoors

LOML wants to move a small round concrete table with wrought iron legs out to our patio.  What product should I use to coat the iron to keep it from rusting?  It's going to be under a patio cover but still exposed to the elements.  Would spray poly work?

Laquer is all the railing person I use applies to the wrought iron.

I can't answer what to do to keep them from rusting, as I never have good luck with that here in Minnesnowta. However, I CAN tell you what to use once it DOES rust - POR 15!
