Colt HSS-M2 Wood drill bits

Someone recently recommended Colt HSS-M2 wood drill bits, claiming they last forever and a day and make clean cuts through and through (no chip out on the other side).  This is a European tool and quick search on the net did not show distribution in the US (not even amazon.com).  Has anyone heard about these bits?  Are the claims I heard exaggerated?  Where can I get them?

Hi,

I see you are located in Pompano Beach. I am heading home from Fort Lauderdale today. I popped into Woodcraft in Pompano Beach and they are closing down on Friday. Whatever is left- and there is not much- is 40-50% off. I picked up a few boxes of Abranet for $10.

They had a couple of Festool items left, including a 1010. It was in good nick with some surface rust (easily cleaned off) on the plunge columns. Also an OF 2000 or 2200 I didn't take a good look.

Sad to see them go, as they were a nice bunch of guys. That leaves Seafarer Marine and International Tool as Festool dealers in the area. I like the people at Seafarer Marine- really professional, well-informed about the product line, but no dedicated demo area as far as I could see. International Tool is a good place too but not as friendly.

I do purchase these from my local Woodcraft. They are as good as you've been told!  I use the 3/16" bit for cabinet hardware drilling and they just work!  I looked on woodcraft.com and they seem to not list many of the five star HSS bits...the standard brad point bits are ok but the HSS are where it's at!

I have those Colt bits and also their Forstner bits and I don't believe there are any finer bits available.

I am very sorry to see that Woodcraft store go... if nothing else, it was good to spend some time looking at the tools, and making spur of the moment purchases.  Bought a TS55 there (when Festool had a sale), and also got the demo OF1400 for a decent discount.  Been to International Tools and their mini-Rockler store, but the place was deserted the one time I went.  But I have found out recently that there are a lot of options for wood supplies in this area.

Try the Famag Boremax Forstner bits, faster, cooler and precise.

I guess the thing about the Maxi-Cut bits that I really like is their shank system -- no set screws required for extensions and very positive locking (no chance of twisting) in the drill press chucks.

I recommend you check out Seafarer Marine. The owner is a top guy who also collects old hand planes and always has time for a chat. They also had a really good lumber selection, but if you are spending $5m on a boat, you can bet that the wood interiors are pretty nice!

Hi, another vote for colt. Ive used them a number of times. Got mine through Brimarc/Axminster in the UK
