Coming to grips with my vises...

Hey [member=8712]Richard/RMW[/member] I found this spread sheet on vises with almost 5000 entries at The Garage Journal website. It's pretty interesting, I just wish they also included the original manufacturer for some of the vises. For instance, I know my Starrett O15 was actually produced by Yost when Starrett quit production of their own in-house vises. The same goes for some of the Columbian products.

And here's a very interesting video on a vise collection from the Practical Machinist website.

[eek] Holy Petunias [member=44099]Cheese[/member] !!! And I thought I had an unhealthy obsession with work holding.

But... nearly 5,000 rows and only one reference to Versa Vise... something's not right.

Thanks, I need to spend some early morning hours perusing the list and forum. I used to dabble over there but haven't visited in years.

Love my Versa Vise! My FiL found it at an estate sale along with the three mounts and pipe clampers. I've also got a Record woodworking vise that's been a lot harder to find space for in my tiny shop.
[member=71322]Imemiter[/member] [member=8712]Richard/RMW[/member] [member=44099]Cheese[/member] I'm curious if Versa-Vise mounting stand is some common diameter pipe, so one could make their own and mount multiple around the bench/workshop. I.e. threaded pipe + standard pipe flange.
Thinking of getting one of those vises. Your fault entirely, guys.  [big grin]

I haven't tried pipe but I've made several adapters from 1-1/2" diameter aluminum round. The top mount is 1-1/2" aluminum reduced to 20 mm to fit into dog holes and the lower adapter accepts a 1/4-20 carriage bolt that slips into the slots of 80/20.

I feel your angst Svar, I ought one during the beginning of this thread.  This group has cost me a lot $$ all for efficiency, and some reward for 53 years of making do .

[member=15585]Svar[/member] as [member=44099]Cheese[/member] noted 1.5". I took a similar approach without the benefit of having a lathe. Purchased 12" of cold roll 1018 for $20 then cut a couple sections.

[attachimg=1]

Lacking a lathe to turn it down to 20mm I bored holes in the end and tapped 5/16", they can be bolted to anything including 20mm dog adapters.

Like Cheese I move them around a lot, and I also attach to the 1.5" 80/20 anywhere along the work surfaces.

[attachimg=2]

The killer feature is being able to lay it on its side, then when the handle tightens it grips against the mount and locks in place. Great for filing, etc.

Hey Cheese, is that a Bultaco lurking under your vise in storage?

Good observation Scott...yes.  [smile]  Bultaco Cemoto  It's a 1974 360 Pursing I purchased new that I just can't get rid of, actually I have a difficult time getting rid of anything.  [big grin]  It's 50th birthday is this August.

I've wanted one of those Wilton corner vises, ever since RMW started this thread.  And for exactly the same thing, a welding bench.

From waaay back on page 1-
coming-to-grips-with-my-vises

Finally saw one on eBay the other day, with a bunch of yellow paint on it.  Sold.  Will be here next week.

[member=51752]tsmi243[/member] you will love it. I recently had to relocate mine on the cart because I had brain flatulence and installed where the guide rods were in the space reserved for the TIG welder but still...

With my space constraints I'm glad I resisted the urge to add a big honking bench vise. The corner vise isn't up to whaling away with a 3# sledge on 1/4" steel but for anything less it's well suited to the task.

Pictures, or it didn't happen... [poke]

Just ran across this new vise from Fein, while not inexpensive it could be incredibly handy in a multitude of situations. Fein claims a 1750 lbf capability.

The prior post sent me back to the beginning of this thread, not a mentally-healthy exercise...

It did however stoke a longing for this Fein vise. Saw someone using it on YT and suddenly the price didn't seem as outrageous...

Richard, this forum is more often than not a "not mentally-healthy exercise."  [eek]

It promotes folks of the close to retirement to retirement age to spend an inordinate amount of money on tools they've managed to not need for years and then brag about the results of the tools that they never needed in the first place.  [smile]

The Fein vise thing however is different.  [big grin]

I've noticed that there have recently been special deals on the Fein vise so it will be interesting where it will eventually land. I think one will probably show up in the elder care home I'm presently being admitted to.  [smile]

Yeah, but he who dies with the most tools wins! ;-)

Well... I have fallen...

This thing is surprisingly sturdy and larger than expected. Will be super handy to hold stock for a quick cut or shaping and sits at convenient height.
The question is should I get two?

It'd be lonely without a mate...

Congrats, at the risk of being a fanboy, these little guys really are in a league of their own.

Well, we all knew you would despite that gruff exterior... [smile]

And if you're asking the question...you already know the answer.  [tongue]

Don't worry, they only reproduce if you feed them after midnight

Ya, bad color if I had to look at it daily, but a great vise for forming sheet metal and aluminum because of the deep jaws. And not a bad deal considering the condition. That's a nice refurb. Tough to tell if that's electroless nickel or cad plated. Either is a winner.
