Coming to grips with my vises...

I wouldn’t recommend anyone try to buy anything from a Russian website and since identical photos are used on the eBay listing I’d be very hesitant in that case too.

And they have 11 of them to sell.

Had to smile at this "vintage" vise, same as the first one I owned, China made & purchased for ~$30 at the pre-Costco warehouse store nearly 40 years ago.

Not sure whether to feel slightly old or simply amused.

Alrighty then...so I'll assume some of the die hard Versa Vise folks on the Fog will now start to gin up their favorite version of the vise just because they have extra time and because they can.  [smile]

Man, I hate this guy.  Out there living my dream life, never even calls or writes.  Never asks me how MY projects are going.

I don't know if anyone else noticed this but at the 28:08 time stamp, he drills a through hole for the tommy bar and then chamfers the hole with the countersink in reverse.  [tongue]

It does look like this, but likely is a wagon-wheel effect, an optical illusion. Shavings produced are consistent with correct rotation.

If you haven't seen his catalog it's absolutely astounding the depth and breadth of the projects. The man is creative, fearless and has the patience of a monk. Worth the time to delve into it.

I made a horizontal bar attachment for my Versa-Vise.
I don't like the stock part available for these vises, because it 1) locks in place with a set screw and 2) sits too low, which doesn't allow much movement. This one is a collar type and is very secure. It is a standard 1.5" drum rack tubing connector made of aluminum. It seems strong enough. They come in a variety of designs, but are often plastic, something to keep in mind. The horizontal piece is 1.5" DOM steel tube that I had to turn down a little (~0.3 mm) to make it fit easy into the vise. It could have been easily sanded down too.

FWIW...just to add to Svar's thread, I've found that using aluminum products for these Versa-Vise applications works well. I was initially very hesitant about using aluminum because I thought the surface would become damaged when the vise was tightened down.

However, over the last several years I've used many 6061-T6 rounds for this same application and they all work well.  [big grin]
