I have the old Domino with the pins instead of the paddles.  Does this create any kind of problems when drilling the holes for the connectors?

I have both Dominos and the Mafell DD40F doweling machine. The Dominos use paddles and the Mafell doweling machine uses pins.

The Mafell pins allow use of a number of useful attachments and provide exceptional accuracy. The Domino paddles, for me, are easier and faster to position than pins.

I find the Domino’s ability to do narrow/wide mortises the best approach to doing a long series of connectors than does the doweling machine.  The doweling machine is great at jointing two smaller pieces where only two dowels are needed. The precision is perfect the first time every time.

Isn’t df700 using pins as well? Could it be that having multiple pins was a way around Mafell’s patent?

Can’t speak to the patent issue, but having multiple references (pins) is a nice feature as long as one doesn’t get them confused.

DF700 uses metal paddles that flip rather than retract as in old df500.

Round steel pins (with the bottom side flat) which retract when not in use. The 700 was purchased about 2 years ago (maybe a little more).
