Conturo and solid lipping

I'd be interested to know if anyone with a conturo has used it for applying solid lippings and not just abs edgebanding. If I get one I want to be able to rip down solid boards to produce my own solid lippings but talking to the rep who is going to be coming to do a demo he seemed to indicate that it would struggle with 3mm and nearer 2mm would be preferable. I've ripped down some oak to about 2.5mm to try, but would be interested to hear of anyone who has actually done this on a paying job other than just playing with it.

On a bandsaw I have been cutting 1mm strips for edging panels for years, very easy on straight edges no problem, problems arise on tight curves and I would say on average 3 out of every 4 work, shakes and defects in the timber only become apparent when you try to bend it on an external corner.

I have just bought a Conturo set (probably from the same guy you are thinking of buying from) and funnily enough I will be shortly trying it out with some home made 1 - 2mm edging, will let you know what happens

It will do 2mm solid but needs to be the propper edgebanding stuff you buy on a reel. This is actually veneer stuck together and not solid cut off boards. That just snaps. Also worth getting the extra roller for it.

Sure it will work but as jimbouk says the material on a reel is best and reliable with less chance of splitting. I have also cut my own and the timber species is important but also the grain pattern.

The Conturo will do 1mm veneers and all veneers up to 1mm are single layer, it is only when you go to 2 or 3mm that most manufacturers go to multilayer built up veneers to cut down the amount of wastage.
Single layer veneers are obviously better if your wanting to give the impression of real timber as it is far easier to blend the edge into the face veneer.
