Just had a very quick play with a new Metabo cordless 18V SCMS on my way home this afternoon. I'm INCREDIBLY TEMPTED!!

This is a very interesting segment. If the Metabo meets its claims of accuracy and cutting performance this could be a killer offering in a relatively untouched segment.

I've already decided to relent an buy into a couple of Metabo cordless tools in the absence of Festool offerings, so this SCMS wouldn't be a huge leap.

If Festool we're to engineer something like a TSC55 headed KAPEX I think they'd have a killer machine.

I'll wait till I pick up my other Metabo stuff before I commit to the cordless Metabo SCMS, but I can't see anything stopping me right now!

Go and have a look if you get a chance, I'd love to hear other opinions.

  I bought one about four months ago and use it nearly every day, its the only SCMS I carry around with me now.
A very portable saw and its also a very capable saw. One 5.2 battery usually last me all day. I can't say enough good things about this saw.
I noticed last week that Metabo are doing a great deal at the moment, buy the cordless saw and get a free 5.2 battery and charger, wish they were doing that deal when I bought mine [sad]

As regards to a cordless Kapex, i spoke with the Festool rep about this, I asked what are the chances of Festool bringing out a cordless Kapex any time soon and he said he can't see this happening then started waffling on about, for any cordless SCMS to be of any good it would need to run on two 36V batteries, well he lost me here at this point and that is when I noticed the Metabo cordlees saw. I did a bit of research and took a punt on it and have been very happy with the saw.
One other thing. I liked the Metabo blade that came with the saw but couldn't get a replacement easily so i am now using my second Erwin blade on the saw and at $30 bucks a blade if you need to cut something like laminate flooring it ideal.

How do you find it for accuracy? Despite the PRC label, it seems very well engineered. I particularly liked the angle adjustment controls, they felt very solid.
 
[member=13058]Kev[/member] Accuracy is fine, I fitted some archtrives and skirting last week. Nice cut and finish.
I think it's a well put together saw, I also like the table extensions that pull out of the side, the hold down clamp is quick and easy to use.
  If there is one part where Metabo have saved on money, then it's the dust bag instead of having a zip to empty the bag, you have a plastic strip that slides over the bag, nothing major just a bit more fidley than a zip.

I bought the Metabo stand with it but i'm not using it at the moment, as I've got my Kapex on it in the workshop while I decide what type of stand to use for the Kapex. So i've been using the metabo clamped down on an old Black and Decker work mate and a roller stand to the side, this set up has worked well, because if I need to use the workmate for something else, the saw is quick and easy to lft off.
 
I recently bought the new makita cordless 36v (18v x 2) brushless and have just spent two days installing stain grade timber trim and architraves etc.
It works perfectly and is accurate straight from the box.It only bevels one way which did annoy me at least twice during the last couple of days.
The bearings on the rails feel rough in use but they work fine and doesn't effect the cut quality.They may bed in over time i guess.
It does have a footprint that is a little large for the capacity of the saw as space in the van is very limited.
Really happy with it and would recommend it although the skin was $949.00 so a little over the top on pricing i think.

What does it mean by "SKIN" ? I see that all teh time and am always confused.

Skin in reference to a cordless tool typically means no batteries or charger. There's a current promo with the Metabo that should include a charger and a 5.2Ah battery. Mobs "like" Sydney Tools often strip the bundles and fiddle with the offers. My local (Northern Abrasives) will do the promo bundle at $565 (SCMS tool, 1 x 5.2Ah battery and charger).

The SCMS comes with a dust bag, clamp, blade, etc.

Still beard-stroking about an Erika too, so I am weighing it all up.
That looks like it is not a bad way to go.

After DB10's positive feedback I'm 90% certain I'll grab one too. One really cool thing about it that stuck in my mind was its relatively compact height when collapsed - perfect to slide under a bench on a shelf.

Bear in mind  you referred  to a saw with a 10" blade. The metabo  is 8".
The capacities  will be  different. Does  the metabo slide on rails?

The thing with angle grinders is that you typically don't use them in bursts ... a drill, scms, etc tend not to run constantly.

I'm looking forward to seeing how well the new brushless angle grinder with the new 6.2 batteries from Metabo performs.
 
I'd love to see an 18v 8" bladed mini-Kapex from Festool, I'd likely buy one. I'm very tempted by the Metabo, were it not for 2 things:

1. Needing to invest in a second battery platform;
2. Slider rails coming out the back - takes up a lot more room than the forward-projecting rails of the Kapex.

I really don't understand why Festool wouldn't want to bring one out. The advances in battery capacity, combined with a brushless motor, make it technically possible. I don't buy the whole "it would need to be 36V to be of any use" argument. If that's really the case, then do as the TSC55 and put 2 batteries on it, but I don't think it's necessary.

Makita do one; Metabo do one; Milwaukee do one; Maybe if Festool began with an 'M' they could do one too...
 
Well I made the the call today to add the Cordless SCMS to the rest of my Metabo order. Looking forward to it quite a bit [smile]
 
Off topic, but - the impact driver is the weak link in the Metabo cordless line up, but a new brushless one will be released next year.

Kev,  I hope you will be as happy with this little mitre saw as I have been with mine, looking forward to your thoughts.
  I'm also looking forward to the new cordless angle grinder with the Li-HD 6.2 batteries, thought the 6.2 batteries would come in handy with the SCMS but its happy running all day on one 5.2.

Timing wise I couldn't resist the current deal that's +5.2Ah battery +charger.

Hopefully all my Metabo gear will arrive at the same time.
