Crown molding on tray ceiling question.

I really don't know where to put this so I threw it here

First of all I do not have access to my camera it is still in boxes so please use your imagination

So we have a tray ceiling in the living room and the best way to describe it is in-between the "steps" of the tray ceiling (sorry don't know the professional term for this area) is a pitched area of about 45 degrees and then the side that butts up against the ceiling the length of this slope or pitch is roughly 3 feet long before it gets to the next "step".

My question is with this design would you put crown molding at the ceiling or just leave it how it is?

Again I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience

Yes, it can be done.

No matter which crown you use (38/52-52/38 or 45/45) you will have to install an extension on the lower edge to reach the angled ceiling. How much extension will depend on how tall thew crown is. Last on I did I had to add 3/8" extension. Sorry no pics.

Do you mean something like this?

Gary Katz did an article that really helped to figure the problem out.

No its like different levels of ceiling and in-between the two levels is this slope that doesn't connect the two "steps"  its kinda weird.....and yea I have Gary's video on Crown molding

I had my customer send me some photos.

[attachthumb=#1] There is a small extension added to the bottom of the crown so it reaches the tray wall that "runs away" from the crown.

[attachthumb=#2] Wider view.

[attachthumb=#3] Another view.

A few more views.

Does that mean that you have a "double tray ceiling"?.  If so, the crown usually will look better at the uppermost ceiling in my opinion.

Yep that is exactly what mine looks like with an added "step" below that

Now you can decided if you want to crown yours.

I agree with Peter, upper one or 2 different size crowns, with the lower crown being smaller.

I should mention to get the lower extension to fit properly, you have to rip a bevel on the edge that abutts the tray wall. The bevel needs to be equal to or steeper than the tray angle to fit properly.
