Curve sizes with a Carvex

Are you asking------ if trammel is used what is the smallest radius?

Hello,

How small of a radius curve can the Carvex cut?

Thanks, TaylorMade

I saw Steve Bace (Festool Trainer) cut about a 1" circle freehand. Probably more of a'plug' than a circle...

I have cut curves with a radius of about 10 mm thanks to the reasonable "set" of the blade that I was using.

Blades with little set cannot cut such tight curves. The width of the cut is down to the amount of set. The greater the width of cut then the more room the blade has to move around a bend.

The smaller the width (not thickness) of the blade then the tighter the curve that can be cut.

I would look for another method/tool to cut a hole less than 50 mm in diameter.

For any circle where the finish cut has to be perfect then I would use a router but would rough out (to 1-2 mm) with the Carvex first.

If you're asking with the circle cutter, it's between 4-3/8" and 9' 10-1/8" in diameter.

If you're asking about freehand, the size of a quarter or smaller.

Thanks.  I was asking for freehand scroll cutting.  Wondering if Carvex could replace band or scroll saw.  I guess another issue is holding the work piece.

My opinion is that no, the Carvex won't replace a scroll saw, unless perhaps you mounted it underneath something - you lack the visuals when working from the top - if you catch my drift.

Also, the cut finish with a scroll saw (and its fine blade) is quite different from the jigsaw. Also, a jigsaw can only do some of the work of a bandsaw.

I was playing around with mine & was able to cut a tapered hole about the size of a penny on the top & almost nothing at the bottom, this was free hand. plumb cut with a scroll blade about a 6mm, but with my hands I can only o so much. I was cutting into 3/4" ply & had the 0 setting on the blade.
