Cast?  I thought Woodpecker’s process was entirely CNC.  Just curious. Nothing wrong with cast aluminum, especially since it has clearly been machined (after casting?).

Good question. According to Woodpeckers, the base is made from "cast and ground aluminum plate". I believe that Woodpeckers buys cast and ground aluminum plate, then machines it to shape. So, not cast to form, like a hand plane body might be, but still cast. Cast materials have less stress, so are more stable.

I believe this is just a twist in the words of cast aluminum.

My belief is that Woodpeckers uses cast aluminum tooling plate...better known as Mic 6 for a lot of their flat products because of its inherent benefits. It's virtually stress free and will retain that quality thru temperature fluctuations if machined properly. I've used a lot of the stuff in the past and it's usually within .005" of flatness.

It's significantly more expensive to purchase but is some of the best aluminum plate available if you need its properties. I believe this is why some of Woodpeckers product seem to be expensive.

I was just wondering.

In our shop we had grinding equipment and cnc machining equipment and plain old milling machines.

We machined a lot of aluminum, and it was always done on a milling machine (manual or CNC) or a lathe.  They would never bring aluminum.  Our tool maker said it was difficult to grind aluminum because the heat would melt the surface of the aluminum, and besides machining was faster and just as accurate.

We purchased blocks of aluminum and they alway fell in the category of “billet”, which could be extruded or as cast from the mill.

Aluminum can also be “investment cast” (also known as “lost wax process”).  But that is usually for intricate shapes that would end up having more aluminum machined away than left behind.

None of these processes yields an intrinsically superior or inferior part; it is just a different approach.

Typically, manufacturers are geared to using one main type of process.  Woodpeckers appears to be a CNC machine shop/laser marking shop mainly.

Observed from outside their doors, also does TSO.

I would also note that anodizing not only looks pretty, it penetrates the surface of the aluminum and makes the surface substainally harder and more wear resistant.
