Cutting Crown Molding

Doesn't seem to be a solution as yet.  ??? That's why everyone is so excited about the Kapex.  :)

No reason that you couldn't....the saw needs to be at a 45deg angle, and the rail would need to be at a 45deg angle, the same way you would cut crown on a tablesaw, except that that on the tablesaw, you would use a miter guage.  It would, however, take a lot of trial and error to get it dead on...and cutting crown is always a mind-bender (at least for me..)

However...personally, I wouldn't do it.  I think that it's much easier to cut crown on a miter saw with crown stops.  This way, you set the crown stops to be perfect, and then you only have to rely on the 45deg stop on the miter saw to be dead on.

That being said, crown miters (compound miters) is the only time that I use the miter saw for miters....all other times it's either the tablesaw or MFT...much more accurate.

Actually, there is a way to cut crown with the MFT and the plunge saw. Basically, you'd cut the crown flat like some do on a miter saw. You'd set the MFT for one angle and the saw for another. Sorry, I don't know the angles off the top of my head because I don't cut crown flat. They might be 33.9 and 31.6, but I'm not sure. You'd have a hell of a time getting repeatable results doing it with the MFT and the saw though. I doubt anyone is going to do this, including myself, as it just doesn't make much sense. However, if you're desparate enough, it can be done.

Good luck with it though.

yes...sorry...in my post, I said 45 and 45...thanks for the correction.

Check out this article.  The angles for cutting crown are in the article, along with alternative methods for cutting on a CMS or SCMS.  The angle you set when cutting crown flat on the table depends on the type of crown you are cutting and the angle between the walls.  The article has a chart with the angles needed.

To me it's a whole lot easier to cut crown on a CMS.

Kapex Baby,

Because if you are cutting crown flat you need to be able to

bevel the saw both right and left or in the case of the MFT, reverse the guide rail.

Baaa.  As lou said I don't cut crown flat either.

Unless of course its huge.  Anything over 6"
