cutting verticle base with kapex

OK I took the plunge and bought this saw last week.  Over all I'm very happy with it, but Fri I was at a job where I needed to cut 5 1\4" base
And I couldn't cut it vertically because it hit on the gear box on the right side of the saw.  So I ended up cutting it all laid flat on the deck using the bevel to cut all the miters.  This worked out OK just seamed awkward to me.  Am I doing something wrong or is this common practice to cut this way on the kapex?  Maybe I just have been cutting it wrong the whole time and need to change my cutting style.  Any thoughts or comments on this

When cutting some larger stock I have cut it just over size then trimmed it so that the offcut on the gearbox side is too small to hinder the gearbox. This may help you, but I can't remember what the max size was and my Kapex is some miles away on site at the moment.

I can't remember it's been awhile since I have tried cutting  5 1/4" vertical but I believe it might cut it in the crown cutting position

I watched a couple you tube videos and it shows them using the special cutting position for tall vertical base at a 45
I have some scraps left over I'm going to try to cut it verticle in this position.  If it doesn't work I guess that's OK because laying it flat and using the bevel cut worked, I just need to get used to cutting this away.
I also like the better read on the laser when its flat on the deck.
I really love my kapex more and more every day no more cutting outside or in the garages!!!  And the accuracy is fonominal!!!

coming from a Dewalt DW780 it took me a decent days work of doing tall base before i got the hang of beveling the saw back and forth. I too find the laser much more visible when lying flat. Its certainly a much better saw and really like it, especially the cart and wings.

Hello All,

New guy talking just got the festool bug a few months ago.....
I never cut tall base vertical before, always cut on the flat. I always measure to the long point so I find when the board is flat the Kapex laser can be positioned on the mark for long point easier. Holding the board flat on the table is key as well.
