Hi, name's Jeff. When I have time, (which is rarely,) I mostly lurk for the last couple of years. I have a daunting project in front of me which has compelled diving into the less used router bit collection I assembled so as not to have to wait/shop for a particularly needed piece.  Come to discover that the 12mm's, in particular, enjoy bonding with the foam insert.  So, to the question(s)....

Is there a (pre)treatment to the bit shaft to prevent/minimize foam bonding for those bits stored without use for prolonged periods?

Best solution for cleaning adhered foam from bit shaft.  (Some of them, it's quite a bit. {NO pun intended}) Acetone? Alcohol? Goof Off?

TIA

Jeff

Would use acetone or mineral spirits.

Because I'm in a high humidity environment I tend to spray my bits with t9 boesshield. I store mine in a wooden case though (enclosed with a rust protecting pack inside), so not sure if this would avoid the 0roblem you are having with the foam. It couldn't hurt though.

Thanks for the quick response, Ed.  I recently re-located to the CT shore, so we're almost neighbors. Coming from Las Vegas, humidity wasn't a big concern.  Obviously THAT has changed. Expounding on the rust prevention product/system would be helpful/appreciated.  I could certainly enjoy building a box for the storage purpose- if necessary.  Though, it will absolutely have to take a back seat to restoring this water-damaged house.  On the positive side, I am receiving many compliments on the cabinetry from the trade people coming through.  ;o)  Perhaps even a bit of jealousy... if not mockery for over-engineering the structures.  I can deal with the mockery.  Over-engineering is a characteristic that stuck with me from aerospace.  I don't mind DIRTFT (dirt foot = do it right the first time).  Thanks again.

Started using the Zerust packs maybe 6 months ago.  I assume they are working since there's been no rust!  I've also thrown them into the drawer where I keep my sawblades as well as the router systainers, since the plunge posts are prone to corrosion.

Lee Valley also has a number of options you can check out on their site.

My storage case is very basic, designed to fit in the drawer I built into my Kreg table, and I use it for the spare bits I have that are not otherwise in "boxed sets".

If you search for router bit storage on the FOG, or simply router bit under the workshops subforum, you'll see a host of clever ways people have been able to consolidate their storage.

I wipe a super thin layer of camellia oil on my planes and bits before I put them away. It's sold as a cosmetic product in Japan, and while pricey, a little bit lasts a long time, and it's not toxic to any form of life I have in my house.
