I have to remove my deck so the house wall can have old stucco removed and new stucco installed. The current deck ledger is attached to the house on top of the stucco. The bottom of the ledger is about 6 inches above grade. It would be very easy for me to just leave the ledger as it is and install the new stucco around it. But the proper way would be to remove it, mount the new ledger directly on the house structure, install proper drip edge / flashing, and stucco around it.
If I remove it, I'll have to cut the joists a few inches away from the ledger with a sawzall. I can't remove the nails that attach the joists to the ledger. Now the joists will be about 5 inches short of reaching the new ledger.
Here's the big question - can I attach a 24" (or longer) 2x6 joist to the new ledger (with brackets) and sister (I think that's the term) it to the deck joists that don't reach the new ledger? I would use several galvanized bolts on each joint. The new sistered joist would not be in line with the original joists, but the deck boards run perpendicular to the joists so no problem there. I'm using Timbertech Evolution Legacy boards. The total length of the joists are about 14' long.
I hope I'm making sense here. My other option is to just replace every joist with a new one. There would be about 12 of them.
Any advice??
