For your plastic part, I'd use the  extra fine black foam with the waffle pattern from Festool(493877). Both the Yellow pad and the  Orange medium pad would probably be more aggressive than your stated needs require, so maybe just get a  White fine pad for that Chrome polishing. Although soap will generally get the foam pads clean, I love Griots Garage Foam Pad and Microfiber cloth cleaner. It cuts through polish and waxes much faster than soap for me when it's time for cleaning my pads.

I have a LOT of stainless steel counter tops and islands I would like to polish after 20 years of use. Any suggestions? I tried the 4000 grit black pads and it just dulled the surface.
Thanks,

Did you use the Platin abrasives ? Or a foam pad with compound applied to it?

Neither.I am a neophyte when it comes to polishing metal. I just used the 4000 grit bare on the surface. I feel like a fool here. Shouda asked for advise before doing this.

I doubt you hurt anything, just maybe a bit more work to get whatever level of finish you're looking for. With 4000 grit abrasive, you are polishing much more than grinding, so no damage done. Are you looking for a mirror finish or something less than that?

Although you should get some good advice here, contact Caswell Plating for great advice on Metal Polishing. Explain to them what you're working with, and they should be able to help even if they don't have pads that fit our Festools . My guess is that you will end up with Festool Felt pads and some various compounds like Green Compound or Chromium Oxide. Maybe some sheepskin buffing pads for the final level of finish. But contact Caswell, they're in NY State and have a web site.  www.caswellplating.com

I was trying to get more of a mirror finish, like it was when new. I know I will not get the micro scratches out.

Cheers,
