Difference between ETS 125 EQ and REQ?

Apparently there is one? More than one would think.
The 2 ETS 125s that I have are older/used models that were given to me out of a lot that my boss bought at an auction. One is from 2013, the other 2015,  both are the EQ variant.
I finally got around to getting one of the positioning aids for one of them, only to find out that it won't work. They only fit the REQ. The body must be narrower on the newer ones?
Anybody got both to compare them?

The edge sanding attachment requires some notches in the body of the sander.
These notches didn’t appear until the “Pro 5” version of the ETS 125 arrived.

It's almost comical that the edge-sanding guide costs $10 more than the whole Pro-5 in a Systainer with that awesome promotion. I grabbed the Pro-5 thinking I'd "see what happens" or gift it to a friend. Now, it lives with the edge-sanding guide on it. Love the combo.

Maybe time for CRG to take a Dremel to the body of those EQ sanders...  [tongue]

One of the guys I worked with at the time got one of those Pro-5s. He didn't own a single other Festool item, but he was at the local dealer on the right day. By the time I heard about it, they were gone.

I'm not sure that's enough? But I'm far more likely to take the Dremel to the edge guide that the sander body. I guess I need to get ahold of one that it actually fits on it to see what it needs.

I didn't buy the edge-sanding guide, or take my Pro 5 out of it's Systainer, until I learned they were compatible.

The funny(??) thing is, I didn't think I "needed" the edge guide until that point. Likewise, since I already had an older ETS, I only ordered the Pro 5 because it was a great deal. It sat in the house, in the Systainer, until I got the edge guide. They are now mated, and sitting unused, in the sander drawer in the shop.

Remnants of my tool-collecting days, I suppose.

Your experience matches mine exactly, except that I have used mine. It works quite well!

I would have, just haven't had the need yet. Soon.

Edit:  [member=44099]Cheese[/member] has a VERY good post that shows how/why the positioning guide fits the ETS REQ, Pro5, DTS, and RTS but not the ETS EQ.  It may help you get in the right direction on what you can or can't do to get it to work with the ETS EQ.

My God...I have a difficult time just remembering if I've paid the monthly mortgage while you can recite with full documentation when & where I've burped out some words that sound minimally intelligent & minimally accurate. Yikes...just a realization.  [smile]

The funny thing is, the directions that come with the positioner specifically not to use it with the DTS or RTS. Not that it won't fit, just not to do it?
Thinking of that though, I apparently do already have something that will fit. I can do some testing with the RTS.

The warning is more because of pad wear than anything else.  The ETS will rotate and use the whole pad face, the DTS and RTS will not, creating a potential for a wear spot/line on both.

If a person MUST use a DTS or RTS it's doable, but I'd consider it to be a quick fix and not a permanent fix. Also, the narrower the edge is that you're sanding, the more this problem is exacerbated. This is a good illustration.

Not to hijack this thread, but...

Cheese, have you used the edge guide with the Cubitron II mesh abrasive yet? Getting ready to pull the trigger on the edge guide, but I just bought a bunch of Cubitron and would like confirmation they play nicely together.

[member=7266]jeffinsgf[/member] not sure if this is the abrasive you are asking about but it worked great for me.
One brisk pass did what an ordinary abrasive needs two slow passes to accomplish.

Dust collection was good. With so little surface contact I use full suction.

Jeff, I have some drawer fronts that I'm working on downstairs, I'll try some 3M Xtract (Cubitron II mesh) on the edge guide later today. I'm curious if the addition of the pad saver will soften the "pad + pad saver + Xtract assembly" just a bit and diminish the edge sharpness slightly...we'll find out. [smile]

Especially since there is not a hard pad available for the ETS 125, only soft & super soft.  That's always struck me as extremely odd. [mad] [mad]

Michael,
That is exactly the abrasive I was asking about. Thank you. Glad to hear it's working for you.

Cheese,
I'm looking forward to seeing how your test turns out. I usually go to round-overs instead of chamfers, so it may not matter for most of my stuff, but I would still like to hear it will keep things crisp when that's the look I'm after.

I forgot to use a pad saver but I only used the Cubitron for a couple minutes, it cuts so quickly.

Cuts so fast you could make small chamfers with 220 grit but I’m afraid they wouldn’t be crisp with a pad saver.

I used some regular Cubitron II film back today on the the edge guide.
The stuff is very aggressive. I think it’s a combination of being more aggressive and then it doesn’t dull as fast because on the design.

Dust collection was ok. The surface for 80 grit was not as smooth as 80 Granat. But I’m sure it will be good at the higher grits
